Biopolymers

Danimer Scientific - Extrusion Coating Resin

Danimer Scientific was the first company in the world to introduce a commercially successful, food-safe extrusion coating resin that uses PLA (polylactic acid) as the primary material for coating paper, paperboard and fabric. In establishing this leadership position, we demonstrated that the extrusion coating resin will perform on existing production equipment at speeds comparable to traditional polyolefin—all while offering energy savings, thanks to much lower processing temperatures.

Danimer Scientific - Compostable Film Resins

Danimer Scientific’s compostable film resins offer an environmentally friendly alternative to petroleum-derived resins such as polyethylene and polypropylene. Our films are created from compostable, bioplastic materials yet are not photodegradable, so they can be used in most applications where good UV resistance is needed.

Danimer Scientific - Biopolymer Additives

Today, more and more consumer goods are being made from PLA (polylactic acid). But many manufacturers are realizing that this bioplastic has some inherent challenges. At Danimer Scientific, we’ve developed additives that help converters and brand owners use PLA more effectively. We formulate several proprietary additives to enhance the mechanical processing and physical properties of PLA-based products. These additives expand the number of applications possible for PLA while maintaining the focus on renewable raw materials that help meet the standards for compostability and food contact. If your business works with PLA and other biopolymers, we stand ready to help you by formulating additives that meet your specific needs.

Sustainable Chemical Products

Acrylic Acid

Novomer has developed a cost-competitive, sustainable route to produce glacial acrylic acid (GAA) from plant-based and renewable feedstocks. The monomer created by combining ethylene oxide (EO) and carbon monoxide (CO) in the COEthTM process is polymerized, forming polypropiolactone-low molecular weight (PPL-LMW). PPL-LMW is hydrophobic, stable under ambient conditions, transportable in a variety of standard containers, storable for extended periods of time, and requires no special handling.

Polypropiolactone (PPL)

Polypropiolactone-high molecular weight (PPL-HMW) is a biodegradable polymer with attractive mechanical and physical properties that make it suitable for packaging and other thermoplastic applications. It is an aliphatic polyester that is stable and easily transportable.

Sustainol - Polyhydroxyls

Novomer is developing a large family of Sustainol polyhydroxyls. The unique Novomer chemistry allows us to use a variety of starting materials to produce polyester, polyether, and block co-polymer polyhydroxyls. Our initial polyhydroxyl products are targeted for the flexible and rigid foam markets as well as the traditional CASE markets.

Future Products

Biocyanate - Isocyanates

Novomer is developing Biocyanate isocyanates. These plant-based or renewable isocyanates are organic compounds that contain at least one isocyanate group, a functional group with the formula R-N=C=O. Novomer produces isocyanates through a novel route that does not require environmentally dangerous phosgene.

Succinic Anhydride and Succinic Acid

Succinic anhydride can be used in a variety of applications such as butanediol, polyurethane, tetrahydrofuran, and more. Succinic acid can be used to make a variety of polymers. The Novomer COEth Platform is lower cost and has significant environmental advantages for the production of succinic anhydride over traditional preparation via hydrogenation of maleic anhydride. The process proceeds simply and rapidly: the Novomer carbonylation catalyst is used to convert plant-based or renewable ethylene oxide (EO) and carbon monoxide (CO) to a chemical intermediate, after which a second CO molecule is added in the presence of the Novomer carbonylation catalyst. The result is pure succinic anhydride. To produce succinic acid, hot water is simply added to succinic anhydride.
