30 Years of Environmental Sensitivity
For thirty years, DeLorme has conducted business in the beautiful state of Maine, surrounded by some of the most treasured waterways and forests to be found anywhere on the planet. As such, we are acutely aware of the importance of protecting our environment and also promoting healthy lifestyles for our employees and neighbors.
DeLorme provides locally grown organic foods and drinks for employees and visitors to help encourage healthy lifestyles. The company is committed to supporting local organic farmers whenever possible, to further the economic viability of local farmers committed to organic growing practices.
The DeLorme campus contains a trail network through the adjacent woods for employees to explore. DeLorme employees participate in many local charitable bike rides, including the American Lung Association Bike Trek Across Maine.
Eartha, the world?s largest rotating and revolving globe, has become an awe-inspiring icon for millions of visitors to our corporate headquarters as well as for vehicles passing along nearby highways. Eartha makes for a spectacular sight when viewed from Route 295 at night, and DeLorme decided in 2007 to switch to energy-efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) to light the globe. This change allows us to reduce emissions and conserve electricity, and also save money in the long run. DeLorme is currently exploring additional ways to conserve energy, working with Efficiency Maine.
If every American household replaced just one light bulb with a qualified CFL bulb, we would save enough energy to light more than three million homes for a year, more than $600 million in annual energy costs, and prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions of more than 800,000 cars.
Corporate Good Neighbor
Conservation is one of the cores of our charitable giving program. Over the years DeLorme has made donations to both large and small nonprofit organizations working to safeguard the outdoor experience and our beautiful natural surroundings in Maine. Additionally, the company contributes to smaller agencies working to fight poverty, especially among the young.
Packaging and Cleaning Agents
DeLorme utilizes recycled paperboard and plastics materials for our product packaging. The company recycles all cardboard and paper waste and uses non-toxic, environmentally-friendly cleaning agents wherever possible.
Housed in a three-story glass atrium, Eartha was first revealed in July 1998 and quickly gained international attention and earned the title of 'World's Largest Revolving/Rotating Globe' by the editors of the Guinness Book of World Records, and still holds that record today. Representing earth as it is seen from space, every continent is beautifully detailed, with vivid colors illustrating all levels of vegetation, major roadways and cities. Ocean depths are also completely represented.
Eartha has a circumference of nearly 130 feet and measures 41.5 feet in diameter with an internal truss structure comprised of aluminum tubing that if laid end-to-end would stretch for nearly three miles.
- Two years to construct in 1997-98
- Four months to refurbish in 2012
- Map scale of 1:1,000,000, which means one inch on Eartha equals nearly 16 miles on Earth
- Weighs 5,600 pounds ? nearly three tons
- Rotates on its axis at 23.5 degrees, just as Earth does
- One combined rotation and revolution occurs every 18 minutes
- Internal truss structure is comprised of 6,120 pieces of aluminum tubing
Eartha is a three-dimensional scale model of Earth with mountain and landform details, which rotates and revolves on a specially designed and built mechanized, cantilever arm and simulates the Earth?s real movements. DeLorme created Eartha by utilizing their mapping database, which is one of the largest in the world. When Eartha was first constructed, it was the first time in history that mapping data was put onto a sphere of this size.
Eartha is open for visitors Monday through Friday from 8am ? 5pm. Visitors are welcome to view Eartha from any one of the three floors.
