HICON/H2 bell annealer facilities - the technology that revolutionized the heat treatment of steel strip coils. The soaking pit furnace provides an alternative to pusher-type furnaces for reheating or homogenizing smaller batches of different aluminum alloys.

Sensitive alloys have to homogenized after casting to reduce the stress within the ingots. Homogenizing temperature is just below the melting point. The more precisely the temperature can be controlled, the shorter annealing time can be without risking the ingot starting to melt. Our HICON (high convection) technologies ensures the lowest temperature scatter and the shortest possible heating-up times.

By controlling aging temperature and treatment time it is possible to manipulate metallurgical processes to improve material properties such as tensile strength, elongation and hardness.

The main criterion here is whether the material is to be annealed in air or process atmosphere. All alloys that tend to discolor due to the formation of manganese oxide (like alloy AA 3004, for example) have to be annealed in process atmosphere.

More and more processors of aluminum strip prefer single-coil furnaces because they increase production flexibility. This means there are none of the usual compromises that are unavoidable with a multi-coil batch furnace. The furnaces installed to date are charged from underneath. For this reason they are referred to as overhead furnaces. It is also possible to install these furnaces so that they can be charged with single coils at ground level.

Inside a horizontal HICON floater furnace, the aluminum strip is transported through the entire facility on a cushion of heated air provided by the special HICON^® furnace wind recirculation system without coming into contact with any furnace components.
