Preliminary ecological appraisals/ Extended Phase 1 habitat surveys
This type of survey forms the bedrock of any ecological site survey, it forms the initial stage for a planning application or to identify if any significant habitats or protected species constraints exist for the site. Ecology by Design have completed many of these surveys for large a small scale projects across the UK.
Protected Species Surveys
We provide a full range of protected or notable species surveys including bat surveys for housing developments, Great Crested Newt surveys for gas pipelines and Water Vole surveys for large railway projects.

European protected species licence applications
For all European Protected Species licences can be granted which enables activities that would normally be illegal for development, conservation or health and safety. Licences involve the preparation of various documents for consideration by the licensing authority (Natural England, Scottish Natural Heritage and Natural Resources Wales).
Ecology by Design prides itself in a 100% success rate in applying for licences to effect protected species including bats, Great Crested Newts, Hazel Dormice, Water Vole, Roman Snail and badgers.
Mitigation and onsite works
Ecology by Design have a lot of experience of designing and implementing site mitigation, compensation and enhancement strategies. This includes undertaking ecological clerk of works, species translocation, watching briefs, supervision of contractors and tool box talks. Recent experience includes the translocation of Water Voles and the creation of a dedicated bat barn following exclusion of multiple bat roosts on a housing scheme.
Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA)
Ecology by Design have completed ecological chapters for inclusion within Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) for schemes across the UK recently including large scale wind farms and housing developments.
Habitat creation and management plans
We can provide a comprehensive management plan working independently or on conjunction with other specialisms such as Arboriculture, landscape architects or other third parties. The service aims to provide simple yet effective management practices to aid you in reaching your goals.
