Today as we are in 21^st century, electricity has become a basic necessity for not just the developed world, but also for the developing and underdeveloped countries. We have been primarily using fossil fuels as feed-stocks to produce electrify for many centuries. These fuels are non-renewable in nature. Not only will these fuels be exhausted, but they also give rise to harmful pollution, especially in the form of greenhouse gases that lead to climate change and global warming.

This makes it imperative for all countries concerned for greener and more renewable sources for power production. Biomass based power production is one such source of renewable energy. There are wide varieties of biomass available in the nature (from pine needles in the Himalayan region to coconut waste at coastal countries, from agro residues to irrigated high density energy plantations). Variety also exists in the end uses of biomass - from household cooking to megawatt level power generation.

As rural India is largely depending on agriculture for their livelihood, they have plenty of agriculture residues available with them. In fact, they are forced to burn a large amount of it due to lack of its use. It not only generates enormous amount of smoke but also adversely affect the land fertility gradually. Biomass based power plants are most suitable for village electrification in India. This will also uplift the life of the villagers.
