As of 2006, the ISO 9001 standard has been implemented by some 887, 770 organizations in 161 countries.   This makes it the most widely used standard in the world.  As such, ISO 9001 has become an international reference for quality management in business-to-business dealings.

ISO/TS 16949 is a worldwide automotive technical specification.  ISO/TS 16949:2002 (TS-2) is based on ISO 9001:2000, but with adders to address automotive requirements.  Along with customer-specific requirements, it defines quality system requirements for use in the automotive supply chain around the world.

ISO/IEC 17025 is the main standard used by testing and calibration laboratories. Originally known as ISO/IEC Guide 25, ISO/IEC 17025 was initially issued by the ISO in 1999. There are many commonalities with the ISO 9000 standard, but ISO/IEC 17025 adds in the concept of competence to the equation. ISO/IEC 17025 applies to testing and calibration laboratories, and is designed for both commercial laboratories (they perform work for other companies) and captive laboratories (as part of an organization).

IT service is usually provided by an internal department known as the IT organization.  The IT infrastructure includes hardware, software, procedures, computer-related communications, documentation, and skills required to support IT services.  Overall, IT services and management of the IT infrastructure is referred to as IT service management.

Many companies that are registered to an ISO based standard struggle with the required internal auditing.  Poor internal audits are a major contributor to companies failing recertification and maintenance surveys from ISO registrars.
