SBD is a data service that is designed for applications that require data messages of a smaller size or with greater frequency than is economically possible with circuit switched data services, or where there is no terrestrial communication infrastructure available for applications requiring data telemetry. SBD is intended for integration into vertical market applications, in industries such as Oil & Gas, Utilities, Transport, Agriculture, Environmental monitoring and Maritime. Remote applications send and receive messages by using an Iridium 9522 ,9523, 9602 or 9603 L-Band Transceiver(LBT). The service is designed to provide a low cost 2-way packet data communication between remote assets, sensors or equipment and monitoring/control processes. The service can incorporate a GPS signal, making it ideal for tracking and fleet management applications.

Router-Based Unrestricted Digital Interworking Connectivity Solution (`RUDICS`) is an enhanced Gateway termination/origination capability for circuit switched data calls across the Iridium satellite network. The primary benefits of using RUDICS as part of a data solution over conventional PSTN circuit switched data connectivity or mobile-to-mobile data solutions are: Elimination of analog modem training time Increased connection quality, reliability, and maximizing throughput Protocol independence Lower call costs . For these reasons RUDICS is widely used for communicating with high value, mission critical robotic marine instrumentation devices such as ocean and wave gliders.
