Environment - Waste Management and Landfill Services
Waste Management
Fichtner’s expertise in this area is founded on numerous projects that we have successfully completed or are still ongoing in the municipal and industrial sectors in Germany and internationally. These include preparation of integrated waste management concepts and masterplans, advice and support during privatization of municipal waste management operations, and outsourcing or subcontracting supply and disposal tasks in industry. Additionally, we have conducted production and product analyses under waste management aspects for studies on Integrated Product Policy (IPP) and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). Our range of services is rounded off by education and training measures.
Waste Treatment
Fichtner offers its experience acquired in providing consultancy services worldwide for technical facilities for resources recovery, treatment and disposal for all types of waste, from municipal household waste through sewage sludge to hazardous waste. With its extensive waste management know-how, Fichtner has been the market leader for more than two decades in planning and site supervision of disposal facilities in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Alongside classical facilities for treating wastes, Fichtner engineers plants firing refuse derived fuels for generating electricity, steam and heat for industry and communities.
Waste Landfilling Services
The landfill is the final link to complete the waste disposal chain. Without special precautions, dumping untreated wastes in particular will result in serious environmental harm by polluting the groundwater and accelerating climate change. Regulations now in place in Europe stipulate that only pretreated and mineralized wastes may be landfilled. For social and economic reasons, it is not possible to meet this high requirement in all countries, so it is all the more important that landfills, where they are still required, will be constructed to an adequate standard matched to the local situation, to limit the environmental impacts of waste disposal.
Protection of Soils and Water Resources
The use of land over decades as sites for industrial and waste management facilities has resulted in permanent degradation of soil and groundwater resources. Additionally, the growing worldwide scarcity of clean and readily accessible surface and groundwater increasingly requires action for protection against anthropogenic contamination and excessive use.
