Hydraulic systems are sealed using a combination of specialized components. Together, these components inclusive of the seal have to withstand high pressures, extreme temperatures and transverse forces within the cylinder.

In most applications, the primary function of mechanical rotary shaft seals is to retain the bearing lubricant, avoid leaks and minimize dust, dirt and moisture ingress that can lead to premature failure of the bearing and other system components. Generally made of elastomers, plastics or metal, O-Rings seal a passageway to prevent unwanted loss or transfer of fluids. This is achieved by mechanically compressing or placing pressure on the O-Ring against the walls of the passageway or gland, creating a zero-clearance, positive block to the fluid being sealed. The more pressure applied to the O-Ring, the more effective the seal. Our engineers can help you determine which O-Ring has the right physical limits for your unique application. To further improve your operating productivity, we can also assist in determining proper gland design, material selection and back-up rings that will serve your needs.

Sometimes, the job may call for simple V-Packing Seals – a male and female adapter supported by a number of intermediate rings determined by the system pressure. No matter your need, you’ll always have the full support of GBSA’s engineers and professionals to help ensure you’re operating to your full potential. The flexibility of V-Packing allows sealing in a wide range of pressures for nearly any condition. V-Packing consists of a male and female adaptor with any number of intermediate rings depending on the system’s operating pressure. V-Packing is designed with mating surfaces that provide a “space” between rings. The fabric reinforced space serves as a lubrication reservoir that helps retard nesting and allows all the rings to calm themselves between cycles.
