DNA extraction is often the most time consuming experimental step in the detection of food contaminants. FASTfood is a quick DNA extraction kit adressing the need of short time-to-results. The protocol doesn`t include a DNA purification and concentration step, as a consequence, the use of the kit is limited to specific purposes: DNA extraction from enriched bacterial cultures - DNA extraction from simple and uniform food samples to be tested quickly on receival. The kit doesn`t contain or require any cancerogenic chemical (e.g. chloroform or phenol) and the protocol allows for automation through robotic liquid handlers.

ION Spin K is the kit designed by Generon R&D for the extraction of DNA from various food matrices and microbiological samples, working with a minimal lab set-up. The protocol uses the same reagents of ION Force (Cat# EXD001) with the addition of proteinase-K, and it was adapted to a 1-gram maximum test sample size. A perfect compromise between practicability and DNA quality.
