Groundwater and Hydrogeology Services
Groundwater is a key factor in construction projects and can have major impacts on your project timelines and budgets. Governed by various regulations and requirements by Ministry of the Environment (MOE), Conservation Authorities (CAs) and Municipalities, it is vital to ensure you have considered all elements from construction dewatering, groundwater studies and tests, Permit To Take Water (PTTW) applications and approval, to discharge water quality, discharge authorization and compliance monitoring. GEMS’s Groundwater-related services include:
Surface Water, Creeks, Waterbodies Services
Whether you are dealing with surface water run-off from your construction site, conducting in-stream works or engaging in surface water pumping activities (ie. creek bypass, stormwater management pond cleaning, etc.), there are many things to consider to ensure you are working in the right timing windows, have obtained the necessary permits and are employing best management practices to work in environmental compliance.
Erosion & Sediment Control (ESC) Services
Erosion & Sediment Control (ESC) measures must be employed to ensure water quality protection.Preventing erosion, automatically results in sediment control. That said, we all know we can not completely control erosion therefore, sediment controls are also needed. Implementing both erosion and sediment controls on your site will minimize sediment from entering a watercourse, wetland or storm drain.
Environmental Compliance Monitoring Services
Environmental Compliance Monitoring is perhaps one of the most critical steps to ensure the ongoing success of your project. Overlooking the importance of monitoring, particularly continuous monitoring throughout the lifecycle and stages of the project can bring about serious consequences. Essentially, monitoring ensures that you are doing what you are required to do in a permit, that the quality of water you are discharging from a site meets standards, that the filtration and treatment system you put in place is working, etc. We all know site conditions change, weather can wreak havoc on a site and equipment can fail – the only way to know how all the above affects your site, is through monitoring.
Aquatic and Ecological Services
Plants and animals…otherwise referred to as flora and fauna; or vegetation, fish, birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles; or terrestrial ecology, aquatic ecology, wildlife biology, aquatic biology, fisheries biology etc… are vital to maintaining healthy communities and environment.
Emergency Response Services
At GEMS, we often get emergency calls because a permit wasn’t obtained, there was a changed condition (ie. unexpected site condition), Erosion & Sediment Control measures failed, dirty discharge water is entering a creek, sewer main break occurred adjacent to a watercourse, spills containment, cleanup and remediation is required, fish rescue, working outside fisheries window, etc. And when something goes wrong, we know what to do.
