Greenway & Trail Planning

Heritage Conservancy and others committed to conservation have succeplaywicki2eded in preserving thousands of individual parcels of land that provide valuable wildlife habitat, riparian stream buffers, scenic vistas, and healthy recreational opportunities, among many other benefits. However, in some cases, their value is limited because they exist in isolation. One way to mitigate this problem is to connect these open spaces by a network of natural corridors—a greenway. Connecting core areas through trails is also one of the best ways we know to engage the public with their natural environment. Trails allow people to experience open spaces and the wonders they hold first-hand, which almost inevitably leads to a desire to see those areas preserved and protected.

Strategic Planning

Strategic planning is a critical and often overlooked element of organizational management. Heritage Conservancy works to support other nonprofit organizations in the development of strategic plans in order to help build and sustain the capacity of our partners and friends. Many smaller organizations have never gone through a strategic planning process and could greatly benefit from it. For example, many watershed associations have conservation plans that guide the restoration work on the ground. However, these rarely address the long-term viability of the organization charged with implementation of that conservation plan. Strategic planning looks at internal capacity and direction and compares that with external trends in the world around them. Through a detailed facilitated process, strategic planning helps create a guidance document for an organization to achieve its goals in the best way possible.

Watershed Restoration

Heritage Conservancy is dedicated to fully implementing the planning tools developed by municipalities, non-profits and others that focus on improving the quality of the region"s water resources. The Conservancy has been a leader in the development of planning tools such as river conservation plans, and yet also is experienced at restoration. Watershed restoration services provided by the Conservancy include riparian assessments and restoration, the development of monitoring tools and technology, invasive species removal, and other similar work.
