A-HS can play a pivotal role in mitigating climate change by sequestering carbon in the soil. This is because their production process, often relying on waste biomass, can be designed to be carbon-negative, meaning that more carbon is captured and stored than emitted during production. Furthermore, A-HS have been shown to promote microbial activity in the soil and support the growth of bacteria that fix CO2, further contributing to carbon sequestration.

Unlike natural humic substances, which are extracted from finite resources like peat or lignite, synthetic A-HS can be produced from readily available, local renewable biomass sources such as agricultural residues and waste streams. This not only reduces reliance on finite resources but also offers a way to valorize waste materials, contributing to a more circular economy. The hydrothermal humification process, a key method for synthesizing A-HS, mimics natural humification but at a significantly accelerated rate, making it a faster and more efficient method of production.
