Hygrade’s packed tower scrubbers are built to the counter-flow principle, cleaning soluble and noxious gases with a scrubbing liquor as they pass through inert media. The gas or air stream travels up the tower, meeting downward flowing scrubber liquid. Gas absorption comes either through physical contact and the dissolution of gas in water, or by the chemical reaction between gas and scrubbing reagent.

Venturi scrubbers rely on the creation of high-impact turbulence, ensuring close contact between gas and scrubbing liquid. This is achieved by boosting gas through a restricted area or ‘throat’, with liquid injected at the throat to generate the high turbulence zone. Available with both fixed and variable throats, the efficiency of Venturi scrubbers is a direct result of the effective function of this throat area and liquid rate.

Hygrade supplies carbon filters as a stand-alone single stage unit, or as a polishing stage downstream of chemical scrubbers or bio-filters. Available with an extensive range of carbon media, the filters suit many applications, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or acid gases, such as hydrogen sulphide, mercaptans and chlorine. A range of designs created in-house is available; including deep bed, twin bed and annular bed, depending on gas flow and inlet contaminant load.

Hygrade bio-filters, bio-scrubbers and bio-trickling filters are mainly used for the removal of hydrogen sulphide, general odour control in sewage treatment and other waste handling applications. They are available with a range of media, including inert pumice (lava rock) woodchip and structured plastic packing, specially selected to suit individual use.

Hygrade has unrivalled expertise in the design and manufacture of corrosion-resistant plant and equipment, including chemical storage tanks, BS4994-compliant pressure vessels and scrubber internals, extraction ductwork and discharge stacks, pressure pipework systems and tailor-made specialist fabrications. Our in-house metal fabrication unit enables the manufacture of specialist structural supports, access ladders and any other steelwork items, working closely with clients to develop bespoke solutions.

Hygrade has the ability to design and manufacture a full range of tower internals and droplet eliminators in-house. Tower internals can include packing support plates liquid distributors, re-distributors and bed limiters. Tower internal materials can manufactured using a broad range of chemically resistant materials using both plastics and fibreglass.

Hygrade supplies the Odorgard ™ single-stage, catalytic, wet chemical scrubbing system, effectively removing bad odour from waste water and similar treatment works. Under license agreement with Johnson Matthey Catalysts, this system promotes efficient scrubbing of many malodorous compounds and low-level volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in a single stage; with highly effective use of the chemical sodium hypochlorite and no resulting chlorinated organics. The system can be effectively retrofitted to existing scrubber systems, adding a further dimension to high-efficiency scrubbing.
