Sealing And Securing

The existing mineral sealing layer, which could not even be penetrated by water in 150 years, is covered with flexible sealing strips of high density polyethylene (HDPE). This material is resistant to chemicals as well as microorganisms, rodents and plants. In addition the individual strips are tightly welded and then the weld seams are tested for leak tightness using ultrasound.

Intermediate Cover Of The Landfill Body

With extensive barriers of filled landfill sections, we achieve at the location Ihlenberg the effect, that precipitation, rain and snow, cannot penetrate the landfill body. The so-called infiltration can be avoided. The precipitation drains off the intermediate cover and is being collected as surface water in arranged rainwater retention basins. After a safety sampling the precipitation water is being handed over to the natural receiving stream. This way, the amount of leak water is significantly reduced. Thus the storage volume and the capacity of the cleaning equipment can be minimised.

The Final Cover

In a perennial research project, we are currently testing a new, innovative technique for the final covering of the landfill body. The system is supposed to replace or complement the components, which are so far used for the final cover, in the future. The three central components of the system are the reverse irrigation, the gas collection and the leakage location system. With the reverse irrigation the biological mineralisation reactions within the waste body are sustained. Following, the reactions take place controlled and much faster. The aftercare period is significantly shortened. Furthermore the waste body becomes smaller and gas is produced, which can be excellently used for generating energy.

Sorting And Recycling – Preserve Resources

Resources are a valuable asset. Thus it is our declared goal to enable a high degree of recycling within the disposal process. We regain a multitude of the resources and then feed them into the recycling loop. The waste recycling at the location Ihlenberg is already possible since 1996 using a mobile machine. In 1998 this mobile recycling machine for commercial and building waste was expanded into a stationary unit.In 2004 the existing sorting unit for commercial waste (GWA) was modernised and extended. Thus, according to the commercial waste regulations from 01.01.03, a recycling rate of 75% was guaranteed. And since 2005 the rate is 85%. These recycling rates can only be permanently achieved with a combination of material recycling and energy recovery of the commercial waste. In the course of the long-term unit concept this sorting unit for commercial waste was finally integrated in the residual waste handling unit Ihlenberg (RABA Ihlenberg GmbH).

Heavy Equipment – Safe Future

For the waste embedding also, we count on using the newest technology. We master all systems and techniques of the waste installation. Heavy equipment like landfill compactors, mobile cranes, crawlers, and dumpers (big 4-wheel trucks) come into operation. It is important for us to always keep the truck fleet on a technically high level. Old machines are sorted out and replaced by the newest technology. But before a new giant equipment starts its work, the staff at the work yard uses the opportunity to look closely at the “giant”.The management wishes the landfill compactor driver a good trip and “a ton of waste under the shield”.
