Mining Rock Mechanics
Rock mechanics and geotechnics are fundamental aspects for the successful development and safe operation of mines. Knight Piésold uses practical, cost-effective state-of-the-art investigation and analytical methods to evaluate the geomechanical characteristics for various complex geological and mining conditions. We routinely design and manage site investigation programs, develop pit slope designs, conduct stability assessments and operational monitoring for active open pit slopes, and evaluate stabilization/support systems for underground mines. Micro-seismic monitoring of underground mines is one of our specialties.
Water Management
Effective and efficient water management is a key aspect of all mining operations and is often the single most important consideration for developing an environmentally safe and sustainable mining project. Knight Piésold has designed water management systems for mining projects throughout the world. Our numerous site specific integrated water management plans integrate a thorough understanding of the site specific hydrometeorology, surface water hydrology, groundwater, waste characterization, and the various aspects of the overall mine development. We utilize probabilistic modeling when appropriate to ensure that all extreme scenarios can be identified and addressed in order to meet sustainability objectives, and in providing flow estimates to support engineering design and environmental studies.
Social and Environmental Impact Assessments (SEIA’s)
Knight Piésold uses a multi-disciplinary approach with teams drawn from the company"s global technical staff to complete detailed studies of potential impacts for projects throughout the world. Our experience includes work on projects in social and/or environmentally sensitive areas, involving population displacement and resettlement, and with potential impacts to rare or endangered species. Our experience encompasses a multitude of jurisdictions, each with its own specific environmental legislation, policy, and guidance.
