Materials Testing

Quantitative Chemical Analysis Services

Quantitative chemical analysis is performed to accurately determine the concentration, amount or percentage of one or more elements in a test sample. This technique, along with qualitative analysis, provides information on what and how much of each element is present in a sample for a complete elemental analysis. Quantitative chemical analysis can determine the alloy composition of raw materials, verify conformance to a specification or help with an investigation into a manufacturing problem or product failure when evaluating foreign materials or contaminants that affect material performance.

Nondestructive Testing

Ultrasonic Testing Services

Ultrasonic testing, also known as UT testing or ultrasonic inspection, is used to locate internal and external product defects and measure wall thickness discontinuities in tubing, pipe and other materials without causing damage during inspection. Laboratory Testing Inc. provides both immersion and contact ultrasonic non destructive testing methods with the ability to inspect products and materials in all shapes and sizes. Our lab maintains an extensive in-house collection of tube, pipe, bar and plate UT reference standards for efficient processing of orders. We run five immersion ultrasonic testing systems on two work shifts for high-speed ultrasonic inspection of round stock. All of our immersion equipment is computerized for paperless chart recording and file retention.

Hydrostatic Pressure Testing Services

Hydrostatic Pressure Testing provides a method for finding leaks or verifying performance and durability in pressure vessels such as pipe, tubing, and coils. The hydrostatic pressure test is classified as a nondestructive test, which means the sample is typically not harmed during testing. During this particular leak test, a sample that does not meet performance or durability specifications may fail and become unusable.

Mechanical Testing

Hardness Testing Services

Hardness testing measures a material’s strength by determining resistance to penetration. The hardness test is extremely useful in material selection because it provides a hardness value which indicates how easily a material can be machined and how well the material will wear. Hardness testing is also valuable in making decisions about treatments and coatings. The hardness test is usually performed using test machines equipped with an indentor that is forced into the test material over a certain amount of time. Laboratory Testing Inc. performs a number of hardness test methods that use the indentation process:

Impact Testing Services

Impact testing determines a material’s ability to absorb the energy of forceful impacts. This destructive test involves fracturing a notched specimen and measuring the amount of energy absorbed by the material during fracture to indicate toughness or impact strength. Impact testing at Laboratory Testing Inc. is performed by the charpy testing method. This entails striking a notched specimen with a falling weight at a series of temperatures to show the relationship of ductile to brittle transition in absorbed energy.Since iron and all other body-centered cubic metals undergo a transition from ductile behavior at higher temperatures to brittle behavior at lower temperatures, this test is required today for steel hull plate for ships, nuclear plant pressure vessels, forgings for electric power plant generator rotors and other important steel products.

Metrology & Calibration Services

Temperature Calibration Services

LTI Metrology, the calibration lab at Laboratory Testing Inc., has services to meet all of your calibration needs including A2LA accredited and NIST-traceable temperature calibration for ovens, furnaces and temperature-reading instruments. Computerized Fluke calibration equipment is used throughout the temperature calibration lab and for services provided in the field.
