Membrane Interface Probe (MIP)

The Membrane Interface Probe (MIP) is a High-Resolution Vertical Mapping tool which Numac offers to detect in real time subsurface contamination for environmental site assessments and characterizations, specifically volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as halogenated solvents, petroleum compounds, and methane. The MIP is a multipurpose tool for mapping soil and groundwater contamination, specifically VOCs such as halogenated solvents and petroleum compounds. As a continuous VOC sampling system which heats the soil, water, and vapor matrix as it is driven into the subsurface, the MIP maps contaminants within the groundwater and the surrounding soil. The VOC mass which is extracted across a semi-permeable membrane is carried to the surface by an inert purge gas via small diameter inert tubing. Once the compounds reach the surface they are analyzed by a suite of three laboratory grade detectors.

Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF) - UVOST

The Ultraviolet Optical Screening Tool (UVOSTâ„¢) utilises Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF) technology to quickly and efficiently delineate Light Non-Aqueous Phase Liquid (LNAPL) in the subsurface. This tool analyses petroleum in real time and high resolution (65 readings per meter),and can detect all types of petroleum, such as petrol, diesel fuel, oils (bunker, crude, hydraulic, waste, cutting, etc.) as well as creosote and coal tar. How UVOST Works: Petroleum hydrocarbons contain significant amounts of naturally fluorescent polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Contact from ultraviolet (laser) light from the LIF system causes PAHs to fluoresce. The LIF system uses a sapphire window in the side of the direct push probe to measure front-face fluorescence of the petroleum LNAPL as the probe is advanced into the soil. PAH fluorescence of fuels/oils is directed back to the surface where it is analysed. Responses are indicated in real-time on a graph of UVOST signal vs. depth.
