Multibeam Full Coverage Bathymetry

SSS - Side-scan Sonar

The Side Scan Sonar is used for the ultrasonic imaging of the seafloor. It consists of two transducers mounted on each port of an underwater fish. The towed configuration provides better image because it assures a smoother trajectory. It is most useful for seabed mapping, wreck surveys, seek and rescue operations, UXO and object surveys and other applications where imaging the seabed is needed. Side-scan sonars are used for underwater sound visualization of the seafloor and targets of interest. It works using ultrasounds, being independent from water transparency and providing centimeter resolution images. The resolution of the sonogram is proportional to the used frequency. Thus, for a large frequency, the resolution of the sonogram will be larger, but because of the fast attenuation of high- frequency sound in water, it can only provide a smaller coverage. We operate several systems with frequencies ranging between 330 and 1250 kHz.

ASC - Acoustic Seabed Classification

Acoustic Seafloor Classification using Side-scan sonar data. Mapping benthic habitats is necessary for the implementation of a balanced approach on ecosystems in the management of marine protected areas. It is focused on monitoring and identifying the marine ecosystems by shaping the geometry and distribution of the habitats and building up a complete map of the seafloor. We follow a combined multidisciplinary methodology for mapping coastal habitats, initially implying the mapping of acoustic facies of the seafloor, associating the acoustic facies with lithological ones and correlating information concerning the environment with spot observations on biological features. We scan the areas of interest using sonars and based on the backscatter properties we create a map of acoustic facies distribution. Ground truthing is necessary in order to confirm the lithology of acoustic classes and samples are analyzed with a laser grain-sizer.

UMS - Underwater Mass Spectrometry

Mass Spectrometry performed on site using the revolutionary Spyglass S200 Underwater Mass Spectrometer. Capable of providing real-time in situ The Spyglass Underwater Mass Spectrometer S200 platform is a powerful analytical tool for a wide range of applications including hydrocarbon mapping, environmental assessments, leak detection, industrial process control and other operations requiring high fidelity real-time chemical analysis of water or air. Mass Spectrometry results down to a depth of 1800 m. It can analyse chemical substances with molar mass under 200 amu such as benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, xylenes (“BTEX”), methane and other volatile organic compounds, light hydrocarbons, dimethyl sulfide, noble gases, dissolved oxygen (dO), dissolved CO2, and other compounds of interest, at low concentrations.
