Roller gates are typically used for Gravity/Emergency closure and where waterways are too large to efficiently use slide gates. The rollers (wheels) are mounted on shafts fixed laterally to the leaf on vertical girders have double functions: reduce the friction forces and transmit the water load to the embedded parts. Upstream sealing is preferred to reduce downpull loads, to permit venting through the roller gate upstream gap and to facilitate access to penstocks and tunnels. Downstream sealing uses the water loads to compress the joints and enhance sealing.

A floating bulkhead is used to dewater spillway gates or power plant intakes where inaccessibility prevents the use of a conventional bulkhead gate. It consists of individual floating sections positioned using a boat or barge that are then filled with water as needed to lower the gate in place in the opening. For removal, the gate is filled with air to evacuate the water allowing the gate to reach the surface.

Wire rope hoist are used exclusively in facilities where the gate closure is performed by gravity (No downward force) and where extensive lifting height is excluding other systems.

Singular or dual operation hydraulic cylinders operated by a hydraulic power unit (HPU) to actuate gates.

Gearbox actuating a vertical threaded stem. Basically used on short stroke applications. Allows upward and downward forces.

Thermoplastic blades (HMWPE – high molecular weight polyethylene specially compounded to withstand ozone and ultra violet) are held together by stainless steel or galvanized tie rods, nuts and lock washers.
