Membrane filtration is used widely in Nutraceutical plants for separation and concentration applications. Anti-oxidant production. Natural vitamin production. Color and flavor separation and concentration. Organic acid concentration.
With years of experience in the pulp and paper industry, Membrane Specialists offers a full range of membrane filtration technologies that allow producers to more efficiently remove by-products and waste from both their products and effluent. We can engineer and build complete systems for traditional uses, such as water recycling and recovery of valuable by-products, as well as some new uses including the production of cellulosic ethanol.
Crossflow membrane technology is widely used throughout the process industries to provide a cost-effective solution for reducing wastewater volumes. In many cases, the technology can achieve a reduction in the volume of wastewater by a factor of five to ten times, offering potential savings on effluent charges as well as producing a clean water stream that can often be reused as wash water or cooling water within a facility. In some cases the concentrated wastewater can be reused in the production process giving a true “zero discharge” treatment. Payback on the capital cost of the membrane installation can be less than two years depending upon the application.
Membrane Specialists employ its proprietary Fyne process which uses nanofiltration to retain dissolved organic materials (mostly humic and fulvic acids) commonly found in surface waters used for drinking in remote communities in Canada and Alaska. If the organic components are not removed prior to chlorination, they can yield undesired disinfection by-products such as trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids. The membrane system also reduces levels of iron and other metals, along with waterborne pathogens, microbes and viruses.
