Carbon Management Strategies

From a business perspective, rights to emit greenhouse gases are an asset and emissions are a liability. Greenhouse gas emission trading is a market-based regulatory instrument. Consequently, emissions can impact financial performance. It is important to understand how your business is situated with respect.

Ecosystem and Vegetation Environmental Services

MEMS’ team of ecologists has a broad range of expertise in the biological sciences, including agrology, conservation biology, grassland, wetland & forest ecology, ethnobotany, palaeobotany and taxonomy. We have experience working in a number of provinces in Canada, as well as internationally. Our team is a leader in ‘life of project’ experience including planning, inventory, assessment, monitoring and revegetation stages. The scope, scale and intricacies of the projects we complete are tailored to our client’s needs. Our ecosystems and vegetation services include baseline surveys, impact assessment, mitigation measures, revegetation plans, monitoring and land use planning (when the integration of local knowledge is crucial).

Environmental Auditing

Audits are a standard procedure when it comes to environmental work; however, MEMS approaches auditing in a fresh way: working positively with the company being audited to provide them opportunities for growth and learning. As one of the first companies in Canada to employ a Certified Environmental Auditor, we continue to be on the forefront of auditing practices. With an EMS Lead Auditor accreditation, we provide auditing services for compliance with guidelines, legislation, or industry standards. All of our audits are conducted on site, increasing the accuracy of the audit’s result.

Environmental Impact Assessment

Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) are key studies used in support of regulatory approvals and applications. We work with our clients to perform thorough and accurate environmental impact assessments and assess each project individually and advise our clients on relevant information they’ll need to proceed with an assessment. It is important to start the EIA process with a well thought out plan, as it helps to ensure the project continues on schedule and reduces delays. We work with our in-house disciplines, as well as subcontracted experts in other fields when necessary, to provide the most accurate information using the most efficient methods. Our goal is to help our clients through the EIA process smoothly, in support of a successful application.

Environmental Management Systems

An environmental management system (EMS) provides an organized and formal approach to managing environmental issues within an organization. More importantly, a management system is an important tool to improve compliance, prevent pollution, reduce risks and improve cost-effective allocation of resources. MEMS personnel have experience in the design and facilitation of environmental management systems that meet the specific needs of the client. Our experience includes the development and implementation of ISO 14001 compliant management systems, environmental management plans and development of Environmental Construction Operations (ECO) plans.

Environmental Regulatory Processes

MEMS has extensive expertise with environmental regulatory processes for all phases of project development. Working with our clients, we have a long track record of successfully obtaining approvals for construction, operation, maintenance, decommissioning, remediation and reclamation projects for a wide-range of industry sectors, including mining, oil sands, oil and gas, petrochemical, power and infrastructure.

Geomatics

Geomatics is the practice of mapping, processing and formatting geographic and spatially referenced information and presenting it in a way that is easily understood and aesthetically pleasing. Geomatics can be applied to data for reclamation, remediation and regulatory approvals, among other disciplines. At MEMS, our Geomatics Department works closely with our other disciplines, as well as with external clients, to process data for reports and presentations in a way that is user-friendly and easy to comprehend. The role of MEMS’ Geomatics group is to provide expertise in all aspects of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD). Our personnel have a comprehensive background and skills in the latest spatial data technology to support a variety of environmental and engineering consulting.

Geophysics

Geophysics is the practice of measuring the composition of the earth in a specific area using noninvasive techniques. Invasive techniques, such as drilling and digging, can cause unnecessary disturbances to an area. MEMS’ geophysics team uses scanning, GPS, and other noninvasive methods to achieve an accurate assessment of the area without causing any damage or disturbance. Because geophysics requires no samples or replacement of land, it is a cost effective way to get results. Our geophysics team uses a variety of leading-edge techniques to conduct operations such as salt mapping, contaminate mapping and historic spill assessment. Our geophysical operations are performed in support of environmental applications, environmental impact assessments, assessments for remediation and other environmental services. Information obtained through our geophysics services can be formatted and presented through our geomatics department to enhance clarity, readability and appearance.

Phase 1 & 2 Site Assessments

MEMS performs Phase 1 and Phase 2 site assessments for resource, commercial and other industries. Our services span the duration of a project and our team can handle the process from Phase 1 assessment all the way through Phase 2 assessment and remediation. To ensure safe and efficient project execution, any team member involved in one phase of the process is required to understand the other phases as well. Our in-house team stays up to date on the latest research and practices to ensure that they are always prepared to handle even the most difficult and complex sites. We frequently take on challenging sites, including revisiting and revalidating assessments completed by other companies.
