It is known that oxidized mercury is soluble in water and therefore can be removed from the flue gas by the presence of a w-FGD. However, for certain w-FGDs, when oxidized mercury enters the scrubber it is reduced to elemental mercury which is not soluble, resulting in lower mercury capture efficiency and increased stack emissions. This phenomenon has been coined Mercury Re-emission and is defined as an increase in elemental mercury across the w-FGD scrubber. The application of MerControl 8034 reduces up to 100% of mercury re-emission in the w-FGD, offering a low cost solution to reducing mercury emissions.

MerControl 6012 technology is a patented, non-halogenated, non-carbon breakthrough sorbent for the capture of mercury in flue gas for plants with spray dry absorber (SDA) and circulating dry scrubber (CDS) units. Application of MerControl 6012 to SDA and CDS units results in mercury emissions well below Mercury & Air Toxics Standards (MATS) limits at a lower capital and O&M cost than the competitive technology of brominated powdered activated carbon. The presence of a spray dryer absorber-fabric filter (SDA-FF) provides ideal conditions to realize the full potential and high mercury capacity of the material which is fed as a liquid application directly into the SDA/CDS. In a recent demonstration, the non-carbon, non-halogenated MerControl 6012 sorbent was found to outperform brominated powdered activated carbon from both capital and O&M perspectives. Mercury capture was further enhanced with application of the mercury oxidant MerControl 7895 technology on the coal.

MerControl 7895 technology is a stable, water-based solution that releases molecular halogen to promote the oxidation of mercury released during the combustion of coal. Increased mercury oxidation improves the mercury capture efficiency of existing air quality control devices such as electrostatic precipitators, fabric filters, and wet flue gas desulfurization (w-FGD) units.

Ion exchange is an exchange of ions between two electrolytes. The term is often used to describe the process of purification, separation and decontamination of aqueous and other ion-containing solutions. Ion exchange can also be used to remove hardness from water by exchanging calcium and magnesium ions for sodium ions in an ion exchange column.
