Environmental Assessments
Phase I ESA - Environmental Assessment
Nichols Environmental has conducted over 700 Phase I ESA’s since 1997, with the senior staff having involvement in over 1,250 assessments over the past 15 years. Our extensive experience ranges from single undeveloped sites to conducting due-diligence audits for industrial, multi-site/multi-million dollar corporate acquisitions.
Phase II ESA - Environmental Assessments
Phase II ESA’s characterize the type, distribution, and extent of contaminants in the environment. Soil and groundwater delineation investigations typically take a phased approach as preliminary data is used to plan subsequent investigation steps in order to fully characterize the contaminant plume and calculate the associated environmental liabilities.
Risk Assessments Services
Risk assessment is a tool to evaluate and predict the severity of existing and potential future impacts from contaminants left on site. In order for there to be a risk, contaminants must be present, they must be present at concentrations that are toxic or which may cause adverse biological effects, and pathways must exist by which humans, animals, or plants may be exposed to the contaminants.
Site Remediation
Soil Vapour Extraction (SVE) Services
Soil Vapor Extraction (SVE) is an in-situ remedial technology which is used to apply a vacuum to the vadose (unsaturated) soil zone which has been impacted by contaminants. The technology allows for the controlled flow of air to remove volatile compounds from the soil. Because the technology involves the continuous flow or air through the soil, it will often promote in-situ biological degradation of less-volatile compounds or residuals.Through the installation of either vertical or horizontal wells above the water table, a vacuum can be applied to the wells to pull the vapors out of the ground.
Air Sparging Services
Relevant Contaminants: Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), BTEX, F1 Components, Hydrocarbon Fuels,Chlorinated compounds.Biological Remediation Services
Biological Remediation is an in-situ or ex-situ remedial technology in which enhancements to the natural processes of the environment speed the degradation of contaminants. These processes are able to convert or destroy harmful chemicals into harmless ones such as water and carbon dioxide.
Geotechnical Engineering
Slope Stability
Nichols Environmental can perform slope stability analyses to assess the safe and economic design of a human-made or natural slope (e.g. embankments, road cuts, open-pit mining, excavations, landfills etc.) and equilibrium conditions.
Other
Spill Response Services
Nichols Environmental staff are on call to respond to environmental incidents. Through an effective emergency response program, we have been able to reduce potential environmental liabilities that face our clients as a result of an inadvertent release or incident.
Geographic Information System (GIS)
Nichols Environmental is a full-service geo-environmental consulting and remediation firm that provides environmental, engineering, and GIS solutions to a wide range of industrial, government, and public sector clients.
