In October 1985, OPSIS was founded as a privately owned company. At that time, the founders, who were also PhD students at the Department of Atomic Physics at the Faculty of Physics at Lund University, Sweden, had come across an idea to use spectroscopy as a tool to measure gaseous pollutants in ambient air.

The company`s first premises were established in the Ideon Science Park next to the Lund University campus and the design of the very first measuring instrument was completed. The company was right in time and expanded. Read more about the early years in one of our blog posts Once Upon a Time.

By 1991, OPSIS had outgrown its premises at Ideon and moved to Furulund, where the head office is still located today. There, the expansion has slowly but surely continued over the years with new types of products, new distributor partnerships, more staff, and new buildings, all to handle an increasing demand for the company`s products and services. In addition to the employees of OPSIS, the company also engages a number of external specialists and subcontractors, mainly in the mechanics and electronics fields and mainly in the local area.

Since the start in 1985, the company has delivered several thousands of monitoring systems. OPSIS instruments can be found on all continents except Antarctica. Actively used instruments can be found in at least some fifty countries.
