Nuclear Services

Decontamination, Decommissioning and Demolition

Since 1995, Perma-Fix has completed the demolition and decommissioning of more than 200 facilities containing hazardous and radioactive materials, and has established a process, team, and safety culture to assure on-time project completion within budget. Our project experience covers the full spectrum of radiological hazard environments from nuclear reactor containment vessels to radiologically contaminated structures and surrounding environments. We have experience performing these services under a wide variety of conditions, such as ecologically sensitive areas, unstable structures in close proximity to historically significant structures, highly congested areas, and within occupied buildings.

Remediation

Perma-Fix has over 20 years of experience with remediating sites and returning them to usable space. Clients rely on our industry experts for their ability to manage complex projects dealing with hazardous and radiological contaminants, while ensuring regulatory and safety compliance. With our vast waste characterization and treatment knowledge and experience, we are able to provide clients a one-source option for site and environmental remediation projects.

On-Site Project Support

Perma-Fix leverages its waste and project management experience by mobilizing our personnel to customer sites. Perma-Fix holds a mobile radioactive materials license, that through state approved reciprocal agreements, allows us to manage radiological wastes generated on client sites. We provide trained and qualified personnel for site-specific solutions.

Industrial Waste Services

Oil Filter Recycling

Florida has restricted the disposal of used oil filters in landfills. Perma-Fix provides you with a safe, legal alternative by collecting oil filters for recycling. Recovered metal is recycled into various steel products. Recovered oil is converted into high-quality fuel.

Transportation Services

Our radio dispatched vacuum trucks, tankers and route trucks provide rapid response to your most challenging cleanup needs.

Mixed Low Level Waste Treatment

Macroencapsulation

Perma-Fix offers macroencapsulation services. Our facility personnel will empty the container to screen the debris out and remove any prohibited items and separating any identified liquids. This solid waste will then be prepared for treatment in accordance with the “Alternative Treatment Standard for Debris” (40 CFR 268.45). The macroencapsulation process involves sorting, segregating and supercompaction of mixed debris wastes thus resulting in a volume reduction ratio of approximately 2.5:1. The specific treatment will either be a Chemical Extraction or Macroencapsulation process. The method selected will be dependent upon the waste matrix and the waste characteristics. Final disposal of macroencapsulated wastes can be provided at Hanford or NTS.

Neutralization

Perma-Fix Neutralization/Stabilization can be performed at all four of the Perma-Fix facilities. Due to the waste treatment approach of this section Perma-Fix is providing our treatment capabilities for neutralization followed by stabilization however in many cases combustion at our DSSI facility provides the most cost effective option. Neutralization involves the addition of applicable reagents to acidic or basic mixed wastes to render the wastes non-corrosive. After neutralization, wastes are processed by thermal (combustion) or non-thermal (stabilization) means, depending on regulatory requirements, waste matrix, and cost considerations

Thermal Treatment via VTD

Perma-Fix offers a thermal desorption process which is used to remove the free organic fraction from inorganic solids that contain volatile or semi-volatiles. This process uses a combination of temperature (up to 625°F), vacuum and carrier gases (e.g. steam & inert gases) to aid in the separation and desorption. This process is performed in an oxygen free environment. The desorbed constituents are then treated via direct chemical oxidation or combustion. In some cases, this desorption process can also be used as a destruction process. Once thermally desorbed the waste could require stabilization to render it amenable for disposal. The secondary liquids generated through this process are thermally destroyed via combustion at our DSSI facility.
