Hematite is weighting material used to increase the density of drilling fluids to control formation pressures.  It has a specific gravity of A.& and can t>e used to increase the density in oil and 1   water-based drilling fluids It has a higher specific gravity than barite, and so requires less total product to achieve the same fluid density.
