Cans made of aluminium or steel are often used to store food, drinks, chemicals and other goods. Both aluminium and steel are valuable materials and are easy to recycle.

Cardboard, sometimes called Old Corrugated Cardboard or OCC, is a material that is relatively easy to compact.  Cardboard is a useful and versatile packaging material. OCC is easy to recycle or reuse if it is clean.

Hollow containers and plastic bottles are made of HDPE, LDPE or PET.

Mixed paper is by definition different types of paper mixed together. For instance magazines, office paper, phone books and paperboard packaging are considered mixed paper. Cardboard and newspaper are also considered mixed paper if mixed with other kinds of paper.

Plastic film, which is also called plastic film packaging, is made of soft polyethylene (PE) and used for grocery and bread bags, shrink wrap and other applications.

Newspaper, sometimes called old newspaper (ONP) or newsprint, is used to make new paper for newspapers among other paper grades.

Print and plastic packaging waste is generated by processes in the packaging industry.

Refused-derived fuel (RDF) is a form of municipal solid waste (MSW) that has been treated in order to burn more efficiently. Solid recovered fuel (SRF) is waste derived fuel that meet a higher quality specification than RDF.
