Radiation Protection Products’ lead-lined drywall, also called lead-lined sheetrock, consists of gypsum board laminated with sheet lead to provide radiation shielding from high-level gamma ray and x-ray radiation. Integral in applications that use high dose radiation for diagnostic imaging and procedures, our drywall with lead lining is a permanent solution that offers more effective protection than semi-permanent or mobile partitions.

Exposure to radiation, especially at high levels, causes microscopic damage to living tissue that can result in burns, radiation sickness, and an elevated risk of cancer. People at risk of radiation exposure include hospital and clinic workers, and those who work in facilities where radioactive materials are stored. To prevent these health hazards, lead bricks and other shielding products are used to prevent exposure to the harmful effects of radiation.

Lead lined plywood is constructed of standard or fire-retardant plywood that is laminated with sheet lead to provide shielding from the harmful effects of radiation. The high density of lead makes it extremely effective at absorbing and scattering x-rays, gamma rays and other forms of radiation. It is also highly resistant to environmental and chemical corrosion and is easily bent and shaped.

Construction of radiation shielding rooms and barriers poses unique challenges. Every time a screw or nail is used, there is an increased risk of radiation leakage into the protected area. Radiation can also leak out of seams between pieces of plywood, cutouts for air ducts and outlet boxes. Previous solutions included the use of additional lead strips and discs, making the project costlier and more time consuming.

Radiation Protection Products’ leaded x-ray glass delivers superior visual clarity and high light transmission with little or no distortion. Suitable for many uses and primarily in the medical industry, lead-lined x-ray glass provides high-grade protection against gamma rays and x-rays.

RPP’s sliding radiation shielding doors (neutron doors) are constructed with ¼" thick A-36 steel face plates. A-36 steel flat bars are used for the stiles and the reinforcement inside the door (See details.). Flat bar thicknesses for the stiles and reinforcement are dictated by the core of the door. The core of the door will consist of the shielding requirements (typically lead and borated polyethylene) as determined by a licensed physicist. We can also design the door with extra space inside for future upgrades which may require more shielding. The neutron door finish is completed in the factory with a paint grade primer. RPP offers safety features for the door such as motion sensors, pressure sensitive tape, and battery backup.
