Porous Alumina

Refractron specializes in porous parts made from alumina, and silicon carbide (SiC) that are often used as fine bubble diffusers, wicks, and filters with pore sizes from approximately 0.1 to > 1000 microns. These products are specified because they offer efficient, durable, smart solutions to customers in a variety of applications including dewatering minerals, manufacturing semiconductor wafers, treating wastewater and drinking water, processing chemicals, carbonating beverages, and cleaning emissions. Our capabilities allow us to form small parts only a few millimeters in size to tubes that exceed 1.5 meters in length.

Model YTZP - Zirconia Parts

Refractron’s high purity, yttria stabilized, transformation toughened zirconia (YTZP or YSZ), made in Rochester NY, will reset your expectations for the performance of the parts in your critical applications like those in waterjet cutting, processing chemicals, guiding steel or dosing critical liquids. It is used to make components like a .25” (~6mm) piston, 4” (~101mm) ring, 12” (305mm) blade or a 18” (466mm) plunger. We can polish YTZP parts to a sub 0.5 micron Ra finish and control dimensions to .0002” (.005mm). Hot isostatic pressing (HIPing) creates a near perfect microstructure with the best ceramic properties.

Alumina Toughened Zirconia (ATZ)

Refractron’s HIPed alumina toughened zirconia (ATZ), made in Rochester NY, is a truly exceptional material for severe applications that demand wear resistance, strength, and fracture toughness. It is a composite material consisting of small alumina particles in a YTZP matrix. It is used to make components like wire guides, dies, MWD rotors and drilling nozzles. ATZ parts can be polished to a sub Ra micron finish and our machinists can control dimensions to .0002” (.005mm).
