The first Draft International Standard (DIS) of ISO 45001 was made available for public consultation on January 14, 2016. Participating National Standards Bodies were balloted on the draft standard between February 12 and May 12 with the objective of approving the DIS.

71% of members voted in favor of the DIS, with 28% against and 1% abstaining. In order for the DIS to be passed, two-thirds had to be in favor with less than a quarter against, taking into account abstentions.

The latest stage in the development process of the ISO 45001 standard was reached on January 14, 2016 with the issuance of ISO/DIS 45001. This draft international standard describes the potential requirements for an Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (OHSMS). It identifies the emerging changes expected to be in the final version of the standard, planned for publication in Q4 2016.
