Environmental

Whether you want to acquire a new property, develop a brownfield site, renovate a building, or meet new regulatory requirements, SME has the environmental acumen and resources to effectively chart your course. Our environmental team includes specialists in hydrogeology, geology, remediation engineering, civil engineering, ecology, natural resources, biology, chemistry, hazardous/toxic waste, industrial hygiene, regulatory compliance, and forensics. We regularly monitor changing regulatory requirements so you can stay ahead of the curve.

Geotechnical

So, what"s going on under the earth? Anyone connected with site development — owners, developers, architects, civil engineers, construction managers — needs facts fast to reduce risk and cost. During site acquisition and design, SME evaluates soil and groundwater conditions to assess their impact on proposed or existing facilities. We"re always looking — and finding — ways to slice time and construction costs.

Construction Materials

People expect buildings to stand the test of time, and thanks to quality design and construction and proper maintenance, most facilities enjoy a long life. What the public doesn"t see is the quality control testing it takes to make that building project a success. A wide variety of materials are used in construction, many of which are custom fabricated to meet specific project needs. Construction materials testing improves the quality of construction materials and reduces the risk of material failure. Through field observations and testing, we assess compliance with plans and specifications and workmanship during construction. The level of quality control and material testing depends on the complexity of the project and the types of materials used.

Pavement

Perfecting pavement is our passion. Whether we"re designing new or maintaining existing pavement, SME wants you to get the most life from your pavement for the least cost. Many of our pavement engineers have over 20 years of experience and direct working experience with the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT). Many hold graduate degrees; we even have a few pavement Ph.Ds.

Roofing

Today it"s tough to keep a roof over your head. Regardless of size, roofing systems are a significant investment — and major headache — for owners and facility managers. If your building has a 50,000-square-foot roof, for example, it will have a net worth of at least $350,000. Without proper design, installation and maintenance, rehabilitation costs can escalate to more than double your original outlay in unanticipated repair costs, lost productivity, damaged property, and insurance claims. Can you afford to manage your roof from crisis to crisis?

Materials

It"s no surprise that facilities account for 25 to 40 percent of an organization"s assets — typically 10 percent of their budget. And, it"s no surprise that operating budgets are getting slashed and budget requests are facing intense scrutiny. Which makes a facility manager"s difficult job even harder. What separates the good managers from their less successful peers is their ability to manage facilities efficiently to reduce costs and increase profitability. And that"s where SME can help.
