Working in sewers is dangerous. All wastewater facilities have to be serviced and inspected regularly. For this, sewer sections have to be dammed, dried out and the water diverted. Overfalls also have to be raised, outlets closed and backwater retained.
Flushing
HydroSelf - Gate Flushing System
The HydroSelf flushing system uses detained water to flush tanks with an extremely high efficiency. It operates without any external power and requires no complicated controls. The system flushes floatcontrolled from low storage chambers witch are arranged directly on the floor. It is easy in construction and robust in operation. If electric supply is available, the system may also be operated using electric controls with a power usage of maximum 0,75 kW. The HydroSelf flushing wave is a flushing wave with a typical, very high sweeping force.

Even when CSO’s and SSO’s are equipped with scum boards, considerable quantities of floatables and suspended solids still reach the waters. Sanitary articles, toilette paper and synthetics are left caught in the river bank after heavy rain. The waters are biologically and hydraulically “stressed”.

There are thousands of old overflows in sewer networks. When it rains, this is how considerable quantities of pollution, like sanitary articles, paper and synthetics, reach our waters. Old overflows are often at the performance limit of today’s design, which is why reconstruction through extending the overflow crest is often necessary when installing standard screens. If the narrow space cannot be corrected or the flow rate is not sufficient, then expensive new build CSO’s and SSO’s are necessary.

Packaging, plastics, glass and sanitary items pollute our watercourses. These waste items are derived from the dropping of litter and discharges from sewage overflow structures. Litter accumulates on the highway and adjacent ditches which is then washed into the watercourses during rainfall events. In addition to the general litter which causes aesthetic problems, the run-off from highways also contains oils and heavy metals which can be free floating or attached to grit particulates.

Overflow events within a sewer system can pollute receiving waters with floatables and suspended solids, for example plastics, papers, sanitary articles. This is evidence of insufficient cleaning of the combined sewage at CSO´s. Fixed scum-boards are standard equipment of sewer network overflows according to DWA ATV A-111 and are used to retain floatables. Often the floatables are sucked underneath the scum-board to the overflow. That happens at rising water levels after heavy rain because of the strong turbulences and at dropping water levels because of the collected floatables in the overflow chamber. The shoreline of the receiving water is often polluted with clearly visible dirt and debris.

Modern canal networks should be managed according to the requirements of the operator. An increasingly important factor is the cost-performance ratio. In individual cases a business management analysis is called for. Most of the currently available systems provide very expensive overall solutions, which seldom allow for effective and inexpensive technically independent partial installations. It is not always appreciated that the technology necessary for overall solutions often involves large constructions. Successive expansion is a much better option than an “all or nothing“ decision.
