Asbestos Services
T. Harris Environmental Management Inc. is a leading Canadian company providing asbestos consulting services. We have surveyed thousands of structures of varying complexity to determine the presence and condition of asbestos. These range from major international airports and educational institutions to Government buildings, hotels, office towers, shopping malls and commercial and industrial buildings and utilities. We prepare detailed surveys, which include recommendations for action, and architectural drawings and specifications, which form the basis of contract documentation prior to going to tender for remedial work.
Plant Decommissioning
Following plant closure and prior to demolition or renovation of an existing facility, it is imperative that all hazardous materials on site are identified before any work begins. The type and extent of hazardous materials in structures, equipment, and subsurface soils must be determined, so as to ensure that all such materials are properly removed and disposed of as part of the decommissioning process. Information obtained during plant audits is necessary to enable cost-effective decommissioning or renovation plans to be formulated. These plans must include specifications and remediation practices aimed at ensuring compliance with applicable environmental regulations and other environmental concerns relavant to the facility.
Environmental Site Assessments Services
Environmental Site Assessments (ESA) are of particular concern and value to purchasers, vendors, financiers, real estate agents and lawyers involved in real estate transactions. As the risk of environmental liability increases for property owners, the environmental assessment is becoming an important element of any real estate purchase. T. Harris Environmental Management Inc. can provide a thorough examination of the property according to the Environmental Site Assessment (ESA) guidelines.
Underground Storage Tank (UST) Evaluation
As a result of new waste management and UST regulations in many provinces, underground storage tanks (UST"s) are being evaluated and are often removed or replaced. T. Harris Environmental Management Inc. has developed the expertise to effectively co-ordinate and manage the issues relevant to underground storage tanks. Specifically for Ontario, the 2000 Technical Standards and Safety Act (TSSA) requires all USTs to be upgraded to add leak detection, corrosion protection and spill containment. Upgrades are to be phased-in from October 1, 2006 to October 1, 2009. Tanks of unknown age or over 25 years old must be upgraded by the 2006 deadline. All underground storage tanks for heating oil must be removed if not in use for more than two years.
Indoor Air Quality Assessments
In recent years, employers have been faced with problems and complaints concerning air quality in the workplace. Construction of buildings with controlled interior environments has, in some cases, contributed to inadequate ventilation which has resulted in undesirable conditions in work areas. Our air quality assessment programme investigates air quality and makes recommendations for solving indoor air quality problems.
Noise & Hearing Conservation
High occupational noise levels have recently become a subject of concern and debate in the work environment. Noise induced hearing loss is one of the most common occupational hazards encountered in the work place. It is a problem which is often underrated because hearing loss does not always display any obvious symptoms or pain. Hearing loss is gradual and can be irreversible. T. Harris Environmental Management Inc. offers comprehensive noise testing programs, both in office and in industrial work settings. We then recommend appropriate solutions based on the results of our analysis.
Atmospheric Discharges
All atmospheric discharges from industrial facilities are regulated by various Government agencies. It is therefore imperative that all manufacturers adhere to established legislation. T. Harris Environmental Management Inc. provides the expertise necessary to measure and evaluate problems associated with emissions and to recommend remedial solutions. Monitoring Programmes Include: Stack and duct sampling for particulate and gaseous fractions, analysis of particulate matter, efficiency testing of emissions control equipment, computer generated dispersion modeling.
Hazardous Industrial Wastes
Hazardous Industrial Wastes is a subject of growing concern to the general public, which increases pressure on both public and private agencies and industries to ensure safe handling and disposal of such materials. Our team can conduct site studies to identify and locate hazardous materials, and make recommendations for the safe extraction and removal or destruction of these materials. We ensure complete compliance with current Ministry of Environment regulations.
Air Emissions Monitoring and Reporting
Ontario Regulation 127/01 – Ontario Regulation entitled "Airborne Contaminant Discharge – Monitoring and Reporting" – became law on May 1, 2001 pursuant to the Environmental Protection Act (EPA) and covers 358 air contaminants based on source sectors. Facilities meeting specified criteria are required to monitor and report airborne contaminant discharges under O. Reg. 127/01. (Requirements under this regulation vary depending on facility operations and reporting has been harmonized with the Federal National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI) reporting system).
