Ambient Monitoring Strategic Plan

A growing number of organizations are involved in outdoor air quality monitoring in Alberta and there is an extensive network of monitoring stations operating across the province. CASA stakeholders recognize that there are many benefits to having a provincial strategy to establish overall objectives, identify gaps in the current provincial monitoring network and to support partners as they work together to improve the network’s efficiency. The current strategic plan was finalized in 1995.

Acidifying Emissions Management Implementation Team (AEMIT)

Also known as the Sodium Dioxide (SO2) Management team, the Acidifying Emissions Management Implementation Team was formed in 1997 to: Coordinate the implementation of the recommendations in the 1997 report of SO2 Management Project Team. Evaluate and report on the implementation of the recommendations and the effectiveness of the enhanced management system. Develop recommendations for managing acidifying emissions in Alberta. Develop plans for (a) voluntary initiatives for enhanced performance, and (b) management of the differences between actual environmental conditions and environmental limits. Review current emissions abatement strategies for NOx and SO2 sources, and make recommendations on the need for improvements.

Indoor Air Quality

The IAQ vision: “The indoor air where people live, work and recreate will be free from physical, chemical and biological contaminants that adversely affect the health, safety and comfort of the occupants.” Indoor air quality (IAQ) is the quality of air affecting the short and long term health, safety and comfort of occupants. The Indoor Air Quality Project Team was dedicated to facilitating the development of comprehensive and coordinated approaches to addressing indoor air quality concerns in Alberta. It was established in 2005, and presented its final report and recommendations to the CASA board in March 2010.

Pollution Prevention/Continuous Improvement

The goals of the PPCI (or P2/CI) team were to make recommendations to CASA for actions that, when implemented, will achieve: A working environment in which Pollution Prevention/Continuous Improvement is used to protect air quality. The public contributes to pollution prevention by making clean air friendly choices. The overriding goal of preventing pollution is to eliminate the causes rather than having to correct the problems that pollution creates.
