UV Applications

Trojan - Advanced Oxidation

World leading advanced oxidation (UV AOP) products and services for both remediation and reuse. Includes 1,4-dioxane treatment, pesticide treatment, pharmaceuticals, as well as seasonal contaminants including algal toxins (e.g. microcystin) and taste and odor causing compounds (MIB & Geosmin)

Trojan - Chlorine Replacement - Wastewater

Chlorine gas has traditionally been used for wastewater disinfection for many years. Sodium Hypochlorite (liquid bleach) is an alternative to chlorine gas; however, it is more costly and has the same environmental concerns. UV disinfection can easily be retrofitted into an existing chlorine contact tank and has significant benefits compared to chlorine disinfection.

Trojan - Remediation

In many areas, localized releases of industrial chemicals, pesticides, and fuel components such as benzene and hydrazine. have impaired groundwater quality. These groundwater "plumes" are commonplace, and in many cases impact public water supplies or impedes the redevelopment of potentially valuable land.

Trojan - Potable Reuse

The reuse of wastewater for augmentation of drinking water supplies (a process known as "potable reuse") is rapidly gaining support as a means of achieving a sustainable water supply and for protection against drought. UV and UV AOP products are a critical component of the advanced treatment processes necessary to generate the highly pure water required in these applications.

Trojan - Chlorine Replacement - Drinking Water

Many water providers have challenges controlling the inherent formation of THMs and HAAs with chlorine treatment. UV can help plant's achieve their required CT (ie. obtain 4-log virus treatment credit) without or with less chlorine. Also, groundwater providers recently designated under surface water influence (GWUDI) can install UV to achieve their new treatment requirements without the need for an expensive contact system.

Trojan - Secondary and Tertiary Effluent UV Disinfection System

Municipal wastewater generally requires bacteria treatment to meet discharge limits before discharge to surface waters. The main objective is to reduce the number of waterborne pathogens to safe levels, and thereby lowering the risk of exposing the public to infectious diseases. UV is an ideal treatment option for wastewater since it does not alter the water quality – except for treating microorganisms. UV is a chemical-free process that can completely replace an existing chlorination system and also inactivate chlorine-resistant microorganisms like Cryptosporidium and Giardia. Unlike other chemical disinfectants, UV does not produce any carcinogenic disinfection byproducts that could adversely affect the water quality. There is also an added benefit of reducing the carbon footprint of the disinfection system when a plant switches to UV since the carbon dioxide emissions from chemical transportation is eliminated.

Trojan - Primary Wastewater Treatment

By employing UV as the primary disinfectant, the required chemical CT can be reduced or eliminated (dependant upon local regulations). This results in significantly reduced concentrations of harmful disinfection by-products. In some regions, UV can provide all the required protozoan, bacterial, and viral inactivation while chemical disinfection ensures water remains safe throughout the distribution system.
