Chemicals and Waste Management Programme
UNITAR`s Chemicals and Waste Management Programme (CWM) provides support to governments and stakeholders to strengthen their institutional, technical, and legal infrastructure and capacities for sound chemicals management. Project activities take place within the framework of implementing international agreements such as the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM), the Stockholm and Rotterdam Conventions, or the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS), which are aimed at protecting human health and the environment while ensuring sustainable industrial development.Environmental Governance Programme
UNITAR’s Environmental Governance Programme (EG) develops methodologies, facilitates research, and provides project support to strengthen capacities for effective engagement of governmental and non-governmental stakeholders in environmental policy-making and implementation. Programme activities are linked to the implementation of international environmental agreements, including Principle 10 of the Rio Declaration and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Environmental Decision-making and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters (Aarhus Convention). Methodologies developed through the Programme recognize that a one-size-fits-all approach to environmental governance is not suitable and thus seek to ensure that national and local needs, circumstances and contexts are fully taken into account.Local Development Programme
The Local Development Programme (LDP) was initiated as a result of the World Summit on Sustainable Development organised in Johannesburg in 2002, which acknowledged the key role of partnerships between the United Nations, civil society and academia, local authorities and the private sector in the advancement and successful realization of the sustainable development agenda. Since its inception in 2003, LDP has reached more than 30,000 beneficiaries through over 400 learning events.Public Finance and Trade Programme
UNITAR’s Public Finance and Trade Programme has more than two decades of experience in developing and delivering executive training designed to provide a competitive advantage to finance and trade professionals in today’s global economy. While traditional face-to-face training and networking activities continue, the programme has progressively introduced since 2003 new ICT-based methodologies, such as e-Learning, to offer quality and affordable training to a wider audience. To further enhance its outreach and effectiveness, the programme has established strategic partnerships with several international institutions working in relevant thematic areas, including other UN Agencies.Climate Change
The UNITAR Climate Change Programme
UNITAR’s Climate Change Programme develops methodologies, executes training, supports learning strategies, and facilitates knowledge-sharing with the goal to strengthen capacities in developing countries to implement the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change(UNFCCC) and to advance a green, low emission and climate resilient transition.UNITAR’S Operational Satellite Applications Programme (UNOSAT)
UNOSAT is a technology-intensive programme delivering imagery analysis and satellite solutions to relief and development organisations within and outside the UN system to help make a difference in critical areas such as humanitarian relief, human security, strategic territorial and development planning. UNOSAT develops applied research solutions keeping in sight the needs of the beneficiaries at the end of the process.
