The SMX 650 Radial Forge comprises a highly rigid press frame in which four hydraulic cylinders with corresponding tools are arranged in an "X" shape. Compared to mechanical machines with eccentric drives, SMS Meer`s design impresses customers with its clear, simple and easily accessible layout. The hydraulic drive allows all important forging parameters to be selected freely and flexibly. Another significant advantage of the hydraulic drive (compared to mechanical drive solutions) is the fact that the maximum forging force is always available throughout the entire forging stroke.

Universal Stainless works closely with its customers to insure the proper selection of raw materials. These are formulated to produce the appropriate chemical composition and resultant uniform properties in wire that our customers expect. Operations also include annealing to bring about full softness and maximum ductility, and heat treating to impart mechanical properties obtainable in the heat treatable grades.

Operation of a rolling mill, such as the two-high/four-high universal mill that produces slab and plate products, as well as blooms and billets, is unusual. The mill has an annual capacity of 140,000 tons, and consists of the following in-line equipment: mill approach table, descaler, mill stand, delivery table, hot bed, shear and exit section. The descaler has an operating pressure of 2,400 psi.  The mill is powered by twin 3,500 horsepower DC motors that operate at 10 to 80 rpm, with a screwdown system that consists of two 75 horsepower DC motors that operate at 34 inches/minute.  The maximum separating force is 10 million pounds.  Mill speed can vary from 377 to 754 feet/minute.

Universal Stainless offers a wide variety of forging billets. Our standard grade offerings include EF, AOD melting, vacuum arc remelting (VAR), and electro-slag remelting (ESR). The combination of Electric Furnace, AOD melting and bottom pouring, plus state-of-the-art remelting equipment, ensures product that will perform in the most demanding forging and ring rolling operations.  Our premium melt offering includes vacuum induction melting (VIM) combined with either vacuum arc melting (VAR) or electro-slag remelting (ESR).

Universal Stainless provides a wide variety of ingots for forging and rolling. Ingots are available as bottom poured Electric Furnace/AOD refined, Vacuum Arc Remelted or Electro Slag Remelted. These three melting options provide the flexibility, chemistry control, cleanliness and surface quality necessary to meet the most demanding applications.

Universal Stainless produces plate from 0.5` – 7` thick x 36` or 42` hot rolled widths. Plates are provided in the hot rolled black or unmachined condition. Our rolling mill and finishing equipment provides an annealed plate ready to be machined to a decarb free surface.
