VSI - UAV-mountable Sorbent Tube Air Sampler

The sorbent tube gas sampler AS-111 for UAV can be loaded with four sorbent tubes (weight: 1200 g) of choice. The sample gas inlet can be set and maintained at var. flow rates, e.g. 50 mL min−1 when using Tenax GR tubes. All tubing is made out of PTFE. A gas manifold enables switching between sampling modes, either loading all sorbent tubes simultaneously or individually. The tubes are installed at the outlets of the gas manifold. Each stream passes through a flow sensor before being directed to the suction pump. The VSI AS-111 sorbent sampler for UAV records the actual flow rate, temperature, air pressure, humidity, the activated port number, and time over the sampling event. The gas sampler is triggered to gather a sample utilising a 5 V DC relay, autonomously or manually. The sampler can mounted underneath an UAV fuselage between the landing gear legs using a quick release dovetail mount; 12 V DC power must be supplied by the UAV.

VSI - PhenoRack

The Growth Pouch PhenoRacks are designed to provide space-efficient storage for Growth Pouches (Type 1). The pouches are hung in an upright position in high quality plastic storage containers equipped with a rail system. The size of the containers and the number of Growth Pouches suspended per container will vary depending on the system configuration, but typically 20-30 Growth Pouches will be suspended. Placed on both sides of the Positioning Panel, approximately 40-60 pouches can be stored per PhenoRack. Individual growth pouches are covered with reusable Light Shielding Panels to block light from reaching the roots. Each storage container can be filled with water/nutrient solution (e.g. half-strength Hoglands) - for the bottom of growing papers to rewet themself by capillary action. Alternatively, pouches with water/nutrient solution in bottom-sealed plastic envelopes are used.

VSI - Growth Pouch Stand

he 30° angled (from horizontal, 60° from vertical) stand is designed for - Rigid, Type 2 Pouches, & - Type 1 Positioning Panels with one pouch attached. The angled placement is less likely to cause damage to plant stems protruding from the top. The stand is thus particularly useful when opening Type 2 Growth Pouches for imaging/manipulation or when inspecting/ imaging Type 1 Pouches. The angled mount is also ideal for displaying different root system architectures for educational purposes.

VSI - Whole Air Sampler

Automatic air samplers are devices used for collecting air samples from the atmosphere - both from ambient air and experimental Teflon chambers or PMMA chambers used for gas flux measurements. Measuring the gas and volatile composition and/or isotopic signature of air reveals crucial information about water use, carbon balance, greenhouse gas emissions or other pollutants in natural or managed ecosystems or urban environments, and generally plant and/or soil interactions with the athmosphere. To support cost-effective air sampling campaigns in the laboratory and field, we developed the VSI AS-100 Whole Air Sampler to automatically sample ambient air into evacuated vacuum tubes, i.e. vials, exetainer.

To support cost-effective air sampling campaigns in the laboratory and field, we developed the VSI AS-101 Sorbent Tube Sampler, passing air through diverse sorbent tubes.

VSI - Vial Evacuator

he instrument prepares vials for whole air sampling by drawing a vacuum, filling them with helium (or other gas) and drawing a vacuum again. This is done by piercing the vial septa with needles. The turret holds 12 vials (standard 20 ml size) for convenient batch conditioning. The instrument can be factory adapted to hold vials of other dimensions as required. The evacuated vials / vacuum tubes can be used with a range of commercially available whole air sampling systems including the VSI Automatic Air Sampler AS-100 for lab and field use, and the UAV-based AS-110 Whole Air Sampler.

VSI - Soil Sample Rings

Soil sample rings are manufactured from stainless steel to minimise impact on the sample, other materials are available on request. One side of the rings can be tapered (outwards) to facilitate insertion into the soil (when using the 'direct' type 1 sampler and soil rings longer than the sampler head). High density polyethylene lids (top and bottom) are available for many standard ring diameters to provide secure sample storage during transport. Soil core sample rings are available in various diameters and height (see Soil Ring Calculator below), and with or without bevelling. Soil sample rings are sold in sets of 10 rings.

RRP - Microrhizon

Rhizon samplers can extract small volumes of pore water from soil and sediments, in an easy, non-destructive, repeatable way. They can be used for sampling water from unsaturated soils as well as from saturated zones and the extract can be used for the measurement of dissolved compounds such as nutrients, dissolved organic carbon or pollutants.

VSI - Insect Release Cages

Management strategies involving the mass-release of living control agents have been developed, including genetic control with sterile insects and biological control with parasitoids. The final step of control programs is the release of sterile insects in the field. Different release cages (also "release boxes") for ground-based release of mosquitos, rigid or collapsible, single or modular, were developed by VSI as prototypes for research partners to allow for releasing highly defined quantities and preventing injuries during the storage and transport prior to release - both significantly enhancing the effectivity of the management measures.
