With its bituminous asphalt seals, WALO is also a pioneer in dam and landfill construction. WALO’s know-how is in demand worldwide for the construction and rehabilitation of dams, reservoirs, pumped storage and equalising reservoirs, as well as for the construction of shipping canals, artificial lakes and irrigation systems for agriculture. WALO is continuously enhancing its processes, such as horizontal and vertical laying of bituminous seals.

Mastic asphalt has a structure that is almost completely cavity-free, making it a highly versatile material. Due to its extreme robustness and resistance to salt water, it can be used as a surface for roads and footpaths as well as for mining and bridge construction. Mastic asphalt separates dry matter from wet matter, thus protecting the structure of the surface. This makes it an ideal material for sealing and wearing surfaces, as well as for protective and surface layers in civil engineering.

Since its beginnings in 1917, WALO has been engaged in the construction of new tracks and the alteration of existing tracks, as well as planning and carrying out rehabilitation projects of all orders of magnitude. Today the company offers a full range of trackwork services across the entire rail industry – from the Swiss Federal Rail Service (SBB), to private rail tracks and tramlines, and for industrial rail networks. These services include: building, upgrading, rehabilitation and maintenance of ballast tracks, fixed-track systems (concrete tracks) and special tracks (crane tracks), transformer systems or measuring tracks. We also have expertise in civil engineering for rail tracks, track drainage, foundations for overhead lines and signals, embankment and flank reinforcements, and platform construction, as well as providing staff and equipment for hire.

WALO Civil Engineering is the division that takes care of new-build and alteration projects in the field of underground engineering, general underground construction and specialist civil engineering. The division’s strength lies in compact construction using technically-sophisticated construction processes. When it comes to infrastructure works, WALO tackles large-scale projects (e.g. construction works for public transport and motorways) as well as smaller and medium-sized projects in the field of specialist and urban civil engineering.
