Waterman Environmental Services can help you to ensure your water systems are safe, clean and fully compliant with all current legislation. The HSE’s guidance on controlling legionella includes a requirement to routinely check the temperature of all hot and cold water services. We can provide a comprehensive range of services for water hygiene maintenance, inspection and monitoring to HSE requirements /HSG274 , including routine temperature monitoring.

Under general health and safety law, employers and providers of residential accommodation have to consider the risks from Legionella that may affect staff, members of the public and residents, and take suitable precautions to control Legionella bacterial growth in their water systems, showers and shower heads.

Temperature control is the traditional strategy for reducing the risk of Legionella in water systems, recommending hot water be stored at 60°C so that it reaches a temperature of 50°C (55°C in healthcare premises) within one minute at the outlets, however in areas of potential scalding, thermostatic mixing valves (TMV’s) could be considered. TMV’s are valves that use a temperature sensitive element and blend hot and cold water to produce water at a temperature that safeguards against the risk of scalding, typically between 38°C and 46°C depending on outlet use. The blended water post of the TMV may provide an environment in which Legionella can multiply, thus increasing the risks of exposure.

Upon completion of your Legionella Risk Assessment customers may need to upgrade, repair or replace parts of their water systems, our highly qualified water experts will produce an additional report recommending any modifications and renovations needed to the water system, these may be necessary in order to ensure regulatory compliance with current legislation (ACoP L8 / HSG274).

As part of your on-going water hygiene programme, HSE ACoP L8 / HSG274 advises that the following be carried out: Annually – Inspect cold water storage tanks and carry out remedial work where necessary. Annually (Summer) or as indicated by the temperature profiling. Check the tank water temperature remote from the ball valve and the incoming mains temperature. Record the maximum temperatures of the stored and supply water recorded by fixed minimum/ maximum thermometers where fitted.

Within a pool facility there are many potential uses of water where users and those in the vicinity may be exposed to hazards with the potential to cause injury and waterborne illness.

Microbiological monitoring of domestic hot and cold water supplied form the mains is not usually required, unless the risk assessment or monitoring indicates there is problem. Legionella monitoring should be carried out where there is doubt about the efficiency of the control regime or it is known that recommended temperatures, disinfectant concentrations or other precautions are not being consistently achieved throughout the system.

Cooling towers by design can suffer from fouling. There is a potential of atmospheric and process contamination, bacterial issues along with scale and corrosion fouling.
