Portable Train Weighing Systems
Our portable train weighing systems (PTW’s) are supported through our in-house designed PTW indicator. The large touch screen operated indicator has been specifically designed for the rail industry and train weighing applications.The main display shows three screens. The first screen allows provides a reference / identification on the train being weighed for example “ABC123”. Depending on how many PTW’s are used there is also an option to select the “number of axles” on each car. The printout/csv file is configurable to the rail vehicle layout.
Bogie Workshop & Train Maintenance Systems
Our Bogie Workshop Systems can be integrated into any type of new or existing bogie test machines which are used to set up bogies correctly after being built, repaired or refurbished. Highly suited to bogie weighing our TrackCell (and RamCell) system can offer a complete bogie weight measurement through integrated weighing technology. The rail vehicle bogies are pressed via hydraulic test rigs to simulate train loads. This identifies discrepancies in wheel weights which can be adjusted prior to being applied to the carriage or wagon. Consequently this increases the lifespan of wheels and bogies whilst substantially improving the ride of the vehicle.
In-Motion & Portable Train Weighing Systems
Weighwell - Model PTW1 - Portable, In-Motion Train Weighing System
The Weighwell PTW1 is a portable, in-motion train weighing system. The PTW1 allows the ‘in-motion’ weighing of individual wheels, axles, wagons (railcars) and trains and can be carried to the rail by two people and installed within 15 minutes. Launched in 1997 the PTW1 underwent rigorous testing with Railtrack (now Network Rail) at their ‘Virtual Quarry’, which emphasised the benefit of a portable train weighing system over a fixed one. Insufficient loading on one side can cause the flange to climb over the railhead, which will impact the lateral offset of the load. Our PTW1 can help identify wagons which are side loaded outside of operator set tolerances and can also provide overall gross weights.
Model PTW1 - Heavy Duty Portable in-Motion Train Weighing System
The PTW1 Heavy Duty (HD) is a specialised and robust system that can withstand an increased weighing range of 20t per wheel (40t per axle) and can provide reliable, accurate and efficient results for the Freight and On Track Plant markets. Primarily introduced for the USA market the PTW1 HD allows the in-motion weighing of wheels, axles, wagons and trains and is perfectly suited to the arduous environments of the industrial steel, cement, gypsum and minerals markets. The implementation of rail vehicles with heavier axle loads is primarily to offset decreasing track-time availability and minimise higher operating costs. This results in a greater need to accurately weigh a rail vehicle due to the potential for heavier and/or uneven axle loads, which if left neglected can cause damage to rail infrastructure.

Portable Full Car Weighing System
Many of our customers today request that the rail vehicle is weighed with a Portable Train Weigher (PTW) unit under each wheel, allowing them to see the live wheel weights of the whole railcar when making adjustments. The added advantage of having a PTW unit under each wheel is that it minimises the internal forces of the rail vehicle, providing the most accurate weighments. This is beneficial for trains that undergo pre and post modification’s at locomotive workshops and train maintenance depots.
Portable Bogie Weighing System
The portable Bogie Weighing System is an ideal solution for statically weighing either 2 axle and 3 axle railcar or locomotive bogies and is perfectly suited to the Commuter rail, Urban rail and High Speed rail markets. The use of live ‘real-time’’ information from our industry leading ptwX software allows the user to establish if weight distribution is even by providing weight data relating to individual wheels and axles. The consequences of an imbalance of weight could be increased wear to the vehicles, thus highlighting possible issues relating to safety and loading symmetries.
Portable Single Axle Weighing System
The Weighwell Single Axle Weighing System is primarily used in the maintenance of passenger cars or locomotives at train maintenance depots. This portable static train weighing system provides accurate individual wheel weights to assist in adjustments during the building or maintenance of a wagon (railcar), passenger car or locomotive. Each individual axle is statically weighed to give the accurate weight of each wheel and provides immediate results of any imbalance across the axle. This can provide a continuous weight reference and minimise vehicle downtime.
