All parts, specifically EXCLUDING expendable ‘wear’ parts, that become unserviceable, due to defective material or workmanship, within one year from date of the original retail purchase, shall, at Brown’s option, be repaired or replaced. Tires and tubes not covered by warranty. LIMITATIONS The obligations of Brown for breach of warranty shall be limited to products manufactured by Brown; (1) that are installed, operated, and maintained according to Brown’s instruction furnished and/or available to the purchaser upon request; (2) that are installed according to all other applicable Federal, State, and local codes or regulations; and (3) that the purchaser substantiates were defective in material and workmanship notwithstanding that they were properly installed and correctly maintained as set forth and were not abused or misused. The obligation of Brown shall be limited to replacing or repairing the defective product, at the option of Brown. Brown shall not be responsible for any labor or cost of removal or repairing or reinstalling of its products and shall not be liable for transportation costs to and from its plant in Midland City, Alabama. Use of parts for modification or repair of the product or any component part thereof not authorized or manufactured by Brown specifically for such product shall void this warranty. This warranty shall not apply to any damage to or defect in the Brown’s products that is directly or indirectly caused by; (1) FORCE MAJEURE, act of GOD, or other accident not related to an inherent product defect; or (2) abuse, misuse, or neglect of such product, including any damage caused by improper assembly, installation, adjustment, or faulty instruction of the purchaser. OTHER THAN AS EXPRESSLY SET FORTH HEREINABOVE, BROWN MAKES NO OTHER WARRANTY, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, WITH RESPECT TO ANY OF BROWN’S PRODUCTS, INCLUDED BUT NOT LIMITED TO ANY MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. IN NO EVENT SHALL BROWN BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES OF ANY NATURE SUFFERED BY PURCHASER OR ANY OTHER PERSON OR ENTITY CAUSED IN WHOLE OR IN PART BY ANY OF BROWN’S PRODUCTS. Any person or entity to whom this warranty extends and who claims breach of warranty against Brown must bring suit thereon within one year from the date of occurrence of such breach of warranty or be forever barred from any and all legal or other remedies for such breach of warranty. Brown is not responsible for and hereby disclaims any undertaking, representation, or warranty made by any dealer, distributor, or other person that is inconsistent with or in any way more expansive than the provisions of this limited warranty. This warranty grants specific legal rights and shall be read in conformity with applicable state law. In some jurisdictions, the applicable law mandates warranty provisions that provide greater rights than those provided for herein. In such case, this limited warranty shall be read to include such mandated provisions; and any provision herein that is prohibited or unenforceable in any such jurisdiction shall, as to such jurisdiction, be ineffective to the extent of such prohibition or unenforceability without invalidating the remaining provisions and without affecting the validity or enforceability of such provisions in any other jurisdiction. STATEMENT OF POLICY In accordance with our established policy of constant improvement, we reserve the right to amend these specifications at any time without notice. WARRANTY BY MANUFACTURER Dealer/distributor understands and agrees that the manufacturer extends only the following warranty to its customers. In the event dealer/distributor extends any additional warranty such as enlarging the scope or period of warranty or undertaking a warranty of fitness for any particular purpose or obligation not encompassed in manufacturer’s warranty, dealer/distributor shall be solely responsible therefore and shall have no recourse against manufacturer with respect thereto. 5 Owner Registration WARRANTY NOTES Many components, such as engines, transaxles and clutches, are covered by their respective manufacturers and may have different warranties. These components cannot be covered by Brown Products but are covered by their manufacturers. All parts returned to Brown Products, Inc. for warranty inspection must be received freight prepaid. If a warranty claim is approved, replacement or repaired parts will be returned to the customer freight prepaid. If a dealer makes any type of approved warranty repair, only parts and labor will be credited by Brown Products, Inc. No service call or transportation charges are warrantable. No returned parts will be inspected for warranty claims if not received with a Return Authorization Number. Without a RA#, Brown Products, Inc. cannot and will not be responsible for any returned goods. Use of any replacement parts other than original Brown replacement parts will void all warranties. WARNING: The use of aftermarket replacement parts will change the operational conditions of the machine, shorten the life of other components, lead to failure of the machine, and create safety hazards to all persons near the machine. Brown equipment is designed to use original manufacturer replacements parts meeting the exact specifications of the machine and crafted from high-quality materials. Aftermarket replacement parts are neither engineered to meet the machine’s exact specifications nor manufactured to the same high standards as original Brown replacement parts. Operators of the equipment must read and understand this manual. Failure to read this manual and follow these safety and operating instructions could result in serious bodily injury or even death. Each operator of the equipment should review this manual every six (6) months. Read owner’s manual before operation. 14 Equipment Safety Safety Decals Safety decals must be positioned as illustrated below. Use this diagram to correctly identify missing, damaged, or illegible decals for replacement. 15 Equipment Safety Safety Precautions WARNING Transport with care. Before transporting, lock parking brake and strap unit securely using the bar across top of cutter deck. Never depend on parking brake alone DANGER Protect bystanders, clear work area of debris. Do not operate the cutter near people. Debris can be thrown hundreds of feet. Clear work area of foreign objects such as wire, glass, and other debris. Debris thrown by the cutter can cause serious injury or death. CAUTION Avoid fires. Keep the machine clean of debris, trash, and any other flammable material. WARNING Check equipment before operating. Tighten all nuts and bolts before operating. Make certain that equipment is lowered to ground before attempting to make adjustments or perform maintenance. Replace or repair any safety device, bolts, etc. if damaged or worn. DANGER Do not operate cutter near bystanders, clear work area of debris before operating. CAUTION Keep machine clean of debris. Flammable debris on machine poses fire hazard. WARNING Check equipment before operation. Tighten all nuts and bolts. 16 Equipment Safety Additional Safety Precautions DANGER Stay clear of rotating blades. The cutter is designed to cut grass and brush up to 2 ½” in diameter. Keep hands and feet From under cutter deck WARNING Wear protective clothing. Wear close-fitting clothing and other protective Devices appropriate for the job. WARNING Slopes and rough terrain. When operating on slopes or rough terrain, decrease travel speed. Do not operate in an area where the unit could roll over. DANGER Tighten blade bolts. Blade bolts will stretch with use and must be Tightened. Follow maintenance instructions In this manual. If cutter is operated with loose Blade bolts, blades and blade carrier will be Damaged. Operation with damaged blades And blade carrier will lead to blade ejection And will cause serious injury or death. DANGER Rotating blades. Keep hands and feet from under cutter deck. WARNING Wear protective clothing. WARNING Slow travel speed when operating on slopes or rough terrain. DANGER Tighten blade bolt as prescribed in owner’s manual. Ejection of blade will cause serious injury or death. 17 Equipment Safety Additional Safety Precautions DANGER Keep riders off machine. Riders can be seriously injured or killed by entanglement or by falling. WARNING Hazardous service conditions. While working under the cutter deck, be aware Of safety hazards. Follow safety precautions Specified in this manual. Failure to exercise Caution may lead to serious injury or death. DANGER Maintain safety distance. The cutter creates a serious discharge hazard. Always maintain a safety distance of at least 150 feet. Never operate cutter with by- standers present WARNING Exercise caution while working under cutter deck. Failure to heed warnings may lead to serious injury or death. DANGER Maintain safety distance of at least 150 ft. Failure to do so may cause serious injury or death. DANGER Riders can be injured or killed. Keep riders off machine. 18 Operating Instructions Before starting the BRUSH OX, the operator should: WARNING Read and understand Owner’s Manual and all safety instructions and procedures. NOTICE Check oil level in engine and add if needed. See engine Owner’s Manual for specified oil type. NOTICE Check fuel level in fuel tank and fill if needed. CAUTION Check complete BRUSH OX for any loose bolts or nuts. Pay particular attention to the blades and stump jumper. Check blade bolt tightness every four hours of operation. NOTICE Assure that the blades are adequately sharp for the task ahead. Remember, you would never use a dull axe to chop down a tree. CAUTION Assure that all five front flappers function properly. CAUTION Assure that the skids are properly fastened and in correct cutting height position. When the unit is sitting on a hard surface, the skids should be approximately 1” off the ground. When the front scalper wheels are in the top position, the skids should be in the middle mounting holes. When the scalper wheels are in the bottom position, the skids should be in the top mounting holes. NOTICE Check air pressure in drive tires. Tire pressure should be no less than 14 PSI and no greater than 28 PSI. Each tire is filled with 14 ounces of Flat-Free. Flat-Free can be purchased in quarts (Part # 260-819). CAUTION Assure all other safety devices are in place and functioning properly. 1. Top frame cover plate 2. Front frame closure plate 3. Rear frame closure plate CAUTION Walk through the area to be cut and remove any material that should not come in contact with the cutting blades. CAUTION Assure that no bystanders are within 150 feet of the BRUSH OX at all times. CAUTION Wear long pants, boots, long sleeved shirt, gloves, hat or cap, ear plugs, and eye protection. DO NOT operate if not properly clothed. 19 Operating Instructions (cont’d) Starting and Operating Instructions: 1. Set Parking Brake. Black knob on rear frame closure plate. 2. Turn fuel ON. Two locations: One in fuel line and one on carburetor. 3. Move Throttle lever to Choke position. 4. Engage starter with ignition key. 5. Once the engine is started, move throttle lever from choke to full throttle. 6. Allow engine to warm up 2-3 minutes before moving the BRUSH OX or engaging the cutting blades. 7. Disengage Parking Brake. 8. Without engaging the cutting blades, drive the machine forward and backward for 1-2 minutes to get a feel for how it handles. 9. The maximum Reverse Speed Control is set at the factory in close proximity to optimum location and should be fine tuned by the dealer prior to delivery. The operator should not tamper with this control until he has several hours’ operation experience and feels comfortable with the machine. The Reverse Speed Control stud should NEVER be removed from the machine. 10. The maximum Forward Speed Control is set at the factory in close proximity to optimum location for safe and comfortable operation. It should be fine tuned by the dealer prior to delivery. Adjustment can be made with the star shaped knob located on the right handlebar. DO NOT ADJUST until comfortable with the operation of the BRUSH OX. CAUTION DO NOT ADJUST WHILE MOVING. When using the Forward Speed Control and the Forward Control Lever and the lever does not make contact with the handlebar DO NOT INCREASE PRESSURE on the Forward Lever as it may break the Reverse Control Lever. 11. Forward and Reverse speeds during operation are determined by how far the operator pulls or pushes the Forward and Reverse levers. The BRUSH OX is equipped with a hydrostatic transaxle and has infinite forward and reverse speeds that are determined by the operator. 12. Now that you are comfortable with the forward and reverse motion of the BRUSH OX, it is time to engage the blades. ALWAYS engage the blades and operate the BRUSH OX in the Full Throttle position. DO NOT run the engine with the Choke activated after it has warmed up. 13. TO ENGAGE THE BLADES, place your left hand on the Blade Engage Lever on the left handlebar and slowly push it down to the handlebar. DO NOT push the Blade Engage Lever down rapidly as this will stall the engine. Remember, you are starting two blades and a stump jumper from a static position to 1850 RPM. 20 Operating Instructions (cont’d) Now you are ready to start operating the BRUSH OX. ALWAYS use caution during cutting operation. WARNING The BRUSH OX will climb up a tree that is too large for it to push over and cut. This will create a THROWN OBJECT HAZARD and must be avoided at all times. Also, if the BRUSH OX is tilted more than 20 degrees, the engine can be damaged due to lack of internal lubrication. See the TILT Decal on the fuel tank mount to determine 20 degrees. DANGER If the blades fail to stop rotating within 3-4 seconds after releasing the Blade Engage Lever, STOP USE OF BRUSH OX AND RETURN TO DEALER FOR SERVICE AND REPAIR. 21 Maintenance 1. WARNING Check tightness of all five blade bolts every four hours of operation. 2. Check for any loose bolts and nuts. Tighten as needed. 3. Check engine oil level before each use. Add if needed. Oil should be within the hatch marks on the dip stick. Check the engine owner’s manual for proper oil, oil filter, and oil levels. 4. If the BRUSH OX has been stored for an extended period, check for stale gasoline. If stale, drain fuel tank and replace with fresh gasoline. 5. Check belts for wear, tears, or cracks. Always use Original Equipment replacement belts. See BRUSH OX owner’s manual for part numbers and contact your dealer. 6. Check belt tension. Shut off engine and disconnect the battery. If belts are loose, follow these steps. A. Correct the tension on the transaxle drive belt using the following procedure: 1. Remove the Rear Frame Closure Plate (Item # 33, Part # 260-257). 2. Loosen the nut on the inside of the frame on the Tensioner Rod (Item # 44, Part # 260-754) and screw nut toward the center of the BRUSH OX. 3. Tighten the nut on the outside of the frame on the Tensioner Rod until there is approximately ½” of flex in the belt between the pulleys. 4. Tighten the nut on the inside of the frame on the Tensioner Rod. 5. Remount the Rear Frame Closure Plate. B. Correct the tension on the blade drive belt using the following procedure: 1. Remove the Top Frame Cover (Item # 10, Part # 260-271). 2. Loosen the 3/8” bolt in the slot of the Spindle Belt Idler Arm (Item # 18, Part # 260-261). 3. Place a ½” drive socket extension in the square hole of the Spindle Belt Idler Arm and using ½” drive ratchet or pull handle, turn the Idler Arm until there is approximately 1” of flex in the belt centered between the two pulleys. Tighten the 3/8” bolt in the slot of the Idler Arm. 7. Check tire air pressure and maintain no less than 14 PSI and not more than 28 PSI. Tires have 14 ounces of Flat-Free installed in the tube at the factory. Flat-Free can be ordered in quarts (Part # 260-819). 8. Check engine air filter for dirt or debris and clean if needed. Replace if damaged or clogged. See Honda dealer for replacement parts. 9. Check battery terminals for any corrosion. If corrosion is present, disconnect cables, clean, and reconnect. 22 Maintenance (cont’d) 10. NOTICE The cutting Blades (Item # 55, Part # 260-752) are sharpened on both sides and each end and can be flipped over and locations changed when the cutting edges are dull. The top blade must have the bevel on the bottom of the blade and the bottom blade must have the bevel on the top of the blade. Blade changing procedure is as follows: 1. Remove the Stump Jumper (Item # 54, Part # 260-015) with the Blades attached by removing the center bolt (Part # FB810F32) in the blade spindle and place on a work bench. 2. Remove the four ½” Nylock nuts (Part # NNE50CZ) from the four ½”-13 x 1-1/2” Grade 5 carriage bolts (Part #CB58C24Z) holding the two blades to the Stump Jumper and lift the Stump Jumper off the Blades. 3. Take each Blade and flip it over and change places with the Blades. 4. Remount the Stumper Jumper to the Blades using NEW lock nuts (Part # NNE50CZ) when remounting the Blades. NEVER REUSE LOCK NUTS. 5. Remount Stump Jumper and Blade assembly to the blade spindle. Detach and remove the handle and tires from the unit on the pallet. 2. Mount rear drive wheels on axle. Place one shim washer between wheel and axle housing, and one between wheel and E-Clip. Apply anti-seize compound to axle before installing wheel. (See Illustration A Below) Illustration A 3. Mount handle in either high or low mounting position, using 3/8” x 1 ½” serrated flange bolts. (See Illustration B Below) Illustration B 29 Assembly Instructions (con’t) 4. Remove skids (Item #6, Part # 260-026) from shipping configuration and mount in the middle hole position. 5. Attach blade engagement cable to left handle bar as shown in Illustration C (Below). 6. Mount throttle cable control as shown in Illustration C (Below). 7. Mount transaxle cable control as shown in Illustration C (Below). 8. Install ignition switch and switch ground wire under right transaxle cable control mounting bolt, as shown in Illustration C (Below). Illustration C 30 Assembly Instructions (con’t) 9. Attach forward and reverse control assembly to right handlebar, as shown in Illustration D (Below). Illustration D 10. Now that all control levers and cables are installed, remove the Rear Frame Closure Plate (Part # 260-257) and use Illustration E (Following Page) to assure proper Blade Engagement Cable adjustment. The Clutch Activation Lever should be against the internal forward stop and the Blade Engagement Lever (Part # 260-002) on the left handlebar should be in the full up position. There should be virtually no slack in the Blade Engagement Cable between the lower bulk head fitting and the Clutch Activation Lever and there should be no cable spring tension on the Clutch Activation lever. If slack is present, adjust the lower bulk head fitting to remove the slack in the cable. With the Blade Engagement Lever (Part #260-002) in the full down position, the Clutch Activation Lever should travel 1-5/8” toward the rear of the machine and the spring on the end of the Blade Engagement Cable should expand from 2-3/8” (relaxed) to 3.00” in length. These two dimensions are critical for the Clutch to properly engage and disengage and prevent clutch slippage during operation and therefore premature Clutch failure. All cables should be lightly lubricated daily during operation. Replace Rear Frame Closure Plate. 31 Assembly Instructions (con’t) Illustration E 11.
