Extreme conditions make this large-scale project located above the Arctic Circle in Russia a daunting technological challenge. Yamal LNG will come on stream in 2017 and will have a production capacity of 16.5 million metric tons of liquefied natural gas a year. Like the Ichthys project in Australia, Yamal LNG will help meet growing energy demand, especially for natural gas. After starting work on Solar Star in California, we took another step forward in 2013. Together with our affiliate SunPower, a global solar leader and maker of the world’s most efficient panels, we were chosen to build and operate several solar power plants around the world, in Japan, South Africa and Chile. The latter will be the largest merchant solar power plant ever built, with a capacity of 70 MWp. With a refining capacity of 400,000 barrels per day, or 20 million tons per year, it is one of the biggest facilities of its kind in the world. The complex’s location in Saudi Arabia allows it to capitalize on local crude oil resources and fast-growing markets in Asia and the Middle East. SATORP created a training center to locally recruit the operators who helped commission the plant. Some 400 young Saudis have benefited from the skills taught there. The concept involves offering low-income households in developing countries a line of solar lamps and kits that are innovative, efficient and affordable, in particular through our service station network. And for people living in the most remote locations, we have also trained young local resellers to sell the lamps. It is a successful program: Awango by Total was marketed in 14 countries in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean in 2013. AWANGO BY TOTAL WORLDPORTFOLIO 9 PROJECTS AND PRODUCTS FOR THE FUTURE TOTAL AT A GLANCE 20131918To create an increasingly enjoyable as well as environmentally friendly customer experience, we are redesigning our service stations. Today, the new concept has been rolled out at more than 1,000 retail outlets worldwide. For example, the new stations blend more seamlessly into their surroundings, use energy-efficient lighting, incorporate recycled or recyclable materials, conserve water and offer customers fuel-saving tips. In Africa and the Middle East, where we’re expanding sharply, around 400 stations already feature the new design. The Peugeot- and Total-designed prototype distills the latest technologies. Materials developed by Total substantially reduced the car’s weight, while fluids like Fuel Economy lubricants reduce friction and therefore gasoline consumption. The Peugeot 208 Hybrid FE uses just 1.9 liters of gasoline per 100 kilometers (UTAC results) while delivering sporty performance, accelerating from 0 to 100 kilometers an hour in 8 seconds flat PEUGEOT 208 HYBRID FE WORLDBiojet Maiden FlightAn airplane arriving from Toulouse touched down at the Paris Air Show on June 20, 2013. Although it looked like any other plane, it wasn’t quite, having just flown a test flight with Total-Amyris biojet A-1 fuel, made from plant sugars and used in Europe for the first time. With our biotechnology partner, Amyris, we demonstrated that fuels made from biomass were ready to make the leap from lab to high-volume production.
