The fully equipped, modernfabricating and machining facilities lend them-selves well to the production of high quality,precision engineered products to serve the bulkmaterial handling requirements of today's indus-try.This catalogue is designed to aid the conveyorpulley user in selecting the proper pulley fortheir particular application while at the sametime allowing the flexibility of the hub systemAbove are several views of the manufacturingprocess of a crowned faced pulley. Initially, thesteel rim is rolled to a concentric circle in crownfacing rolls specially constructed for the pro-duction of conveyor pulleys.discs are welded to the interior of the rim.Following this operation, the end discs aremounted using a shaft with a continual keywayto assure perfect aligment of the bushingkeyways.The entire assembly is then hydraulically drawntogether and welded to form a concentric drum.In the final welding operation, the pulley isplaced on a special machine that turns thepulley at a precise speed, depending on thediameter, to ensure a perfect, high penetrationweld between end disc and rim.The pulley is then meticulously checked andverified to CEMA specifications prior to shippingto ensure complete customer satisfaction.Following this operation, end discs are precisionflame cut on a specially constructed cuttingmachine. To assure perfect concentricity, thehub is first mounted in the end disc where uponthe entire assembly is then cut to the requireddiameter. Theadvantages of the 0.0. system are its superior holding power in both lateral and tor-sional directions, its ease of assembly and disassembly and its self locking taper. It has been prepared and used by experienced pulley engineers whoknow the importance of preventing conveyor breakdown by properly matching pulleys andshafts to the system.zontally in the shaft size column. Next, we divide Tl and T3 by the belt width.This gives us PIW for both the Drive {Tv andNon-Drive (T 3) Pulleys.Then using Table VII, we select a pulleydiameter with an allowable PIW greaterthan our computed PIW for each pulley.8. Using Table VIII we again select pulleydiameter by finding a diameter with max-imum shaft size as large or larger thanour computed shaft size, doing this foreach pulley.9. Select the larger of the two diameters foundin procedure 7 and 8 for each pulley.EXAMPLE1. From Table I: 100 H.P. @ 300 F.P.M.=ll,OOO#100 x 33,000(Te). Also 300 -= 11,000#.1. Find the appropriate Horsepower coll:Jmn onTable I. Look down F.P.M. (Feet Per Minute)column until belt speed of conveyor cor-responds. Read across to Horsepower col-umn. This number is T e (Effective Tension)of conveyor system. Also Te = HP x 33,000F.P.M.2. Find the appropriate K factor from TableII. The K factor has to do with the type ofdrive and take-up of the conveyor system.Take this K factor x (times) T e. This is T 2 orT J (Slack Side Tension) for the conveyor sys-tem. T 2 is associated with the Drive Pulley,and T J is associated with the Non-DrivePulley(s).3. For Non-Drive Pulley(s), determine the arcin degrees the belt contacts each pulley.Then using Table III for each Non-DrivePulley, determine the individual factor foreach. Take this factor times T J. This givesthe resultant load for each Non-DrivePulley.4. For Drive Pulley, add T 2 and Te. Thisequals T 1 (Tight Side Tension) for the DrivePulley. Then divide T 1 by T 2' This equalsratio for Table IV. Determine the arc of con-tact the belt makes with the Drive Pulley.Read down the Ratio Column until corres-ponding ratio is found; thE:n go across toArc of Contact Column. Take this newfactor times T 2. This gives resultant loadfor the Drive Pulley.5. From Table V find the desired belt width.Recommended pulley width is given incorresponding column.6. To determine shaft size, use Table VI (a),or VI (b), (allowable shaft load). The tableis computed for Non-Drive Pulleys, (shaftswith 8000 psi allowable bending stress).For Drive Pulleys, we multiply allowableload column by 0.75. The Snub Pul-ley has a factor of 0.51764. 4180# x 0.51764 =2164# (resultant).4. For the Drive Pulley, Te + T2=15,180# (TJ.T 1 -:- T 2 = 3.63 (ratio). From Table IV using210. wrap column and 3.63 ratio, we get a newfactor of 4.5238 by interpolation. Then take4.5238 x 4180# = 18,909# (resultant).9:. Therefore, we would select a 30" Drive (whenttlere is a choice of diameters, always use thelargest), 14" Tail and Take-up, 6" Snub and10" Bends.NOTE: It is also important to examine the beltmanufacturer's recommendations for pulley di-ameters. Even though the Continental Pulley isdesigned to support these loads, the belt manu-facturer may require a larger diameter pulley tolessen the belt bending factor imposed by thesmaller pulley. If their recommendations arehigher for pulley diameter, their recommendationsshould be followed to prevent belt damage. Inthis instance if a belt rated at 440 pounds perinch of width were to be used, the manufacturerwould suggest minimums as follows: 30" for Head,18" Tail, etc.5. Since we have a 42" belt we can see from therecommended pulley width in Table V that weshould use a 44" wide pulley.6. We have a distance of 16" for bearing centersminus face (60 -44 = 16). With a load of 5911#for the Bend Pulleys, Table VilA) indicates a3-15/16" shaft is neededThe Snub Pulley has a resultant of 2164# (16"bearing centers minus face). Use a 27-{6"shaft..The Tail and Take-up have resultants of 8360#;therefore, 4-7/16" are selected.We use a factor of 0.75 for designing the DrivePulley shaft to 6000 psi. We divide the result-ant by this factor. 18,909 -7- 0.75 = 25,212. The Effective Tension (Te) for a conveyorsystem is found in Table I. Locate the appro-priate Horsepower column and lo'ok downthe F.P.M. (feet per minute) column untilbelt speed of the conveyor corresponds.Read across to Horsepower column. Thisnumber is the Te of the conveyor system.Also Te= HP x 33,000F.P.M.2. Find the K factor for the conveyor fromTable II. The K factor has to do with the typeof driv~ and take-up of the system. Take thisK factor x (times) Te. This result is T 3 (Slackside tension) for the conveyor system.3. Having found the maximum slack side ten-sion (T 3)' divide T 3 by the belt width. Thiswill be the calcul~ed tension in pounds perinch of belt width (P.I.W.). Select a pulleydiameter from Table )11 (Wing Pulley Allo-wable Tensions) which has a P.I.W. ratingthat is equal to or larger than the calculatedP.I.W. .4. Pulley width in most cases will be the sameas that of the drive pulley in the system.(Two inches wider than the belt for belts upto 42" wide; three inches wider than the beltfor belts over 42" wide).5. To calculate the resultant load, first deter-mine the arc in degrees the belt contactseach pulley. Then using Table IV (ResultantLoad Factor) find the individual factor foreach. Take this factor x (times) T 3. This gi-vesthe resultant load for each of the pulleysin question.6. To determine shaft size, use Table V (WingPulley Allowable Shaft Loads). The table iscomputed for shaft stresses of 6000 psi. For8000 psi bending stress use a 1.33 multi-plier. Still using Table V, take the bearingcenters of the pulley and subtract the facewidth (See Figure 1). This number is used inthe "Bearing Centers -(Minus) Face" co-lumns. The finished rubbersurface has a cloth impression left on it. Lagging is primarily usedin conditions that necessitate increasing the tractive capacity ofthe pulley in drive applications or for resisting abrasive conditionson other pulley applications. Standard lagging is of 60 durometershore A material and is available in thicknesses of 6, 10, 16, -20and 25 mm. The tolerances of vulcanized lagging are 4 mm onthe rubber thickness. Due to these tolerances, it is thereforepossible that a pulley have a high crown, flat or even concavesurface at certain points even though the pulley had a perfectcrown prior to lagging. The fact that rubber displaces can alsohave on effect on the crown since in high tension application, acertain amount of the crown can be pressed out. If you have anapplication that requires exact tolerances, we suggest you specifya machined lagged pulley.HERRINGBONE RUBBER LAGGINGHerringbone lagging is applied to increase the tractive capacityof the pulley under wet or dirty conditions in which plain laggingwould not be sufficient for the task. The herringbone designhelps avoid build up of foreign material between the belt andpulley surface thus lowering the belt wear and minimizingalignment problems.The minimum thickness that can be effectively grooved with theherringbone pattern is 10 mm. As with plain lagging, the samerubber specifications and limitations apply. Therefore if exacttolerances are necessary, a machined lagged pulley is advisable.HOLZ SUDELAGA quality rubber lagging is bonded directly to special tractionpads which in turn are fitted to the pulley rim by special retai-ning bars. This system allows new lagging to be installed on thepulley without removing it from its position on the conveyor.LAGGED WING PULLEYSA lagged wing pulley is used in cases involving build up of materialbetween the conveyor belt and pulley causing belt misalignmentand excessive wear. It can also be used in cases requiring a greatertractive capacity between belt and pulley. The lagged wing pulleyprinciple works as follows. Upon contact with the belt, therubber on the wing tip compresses, when tension is releived itimmediatly returns to its original shape thereby cleaning itself inthe process. These wing tip rubber sections are easily replaceable.19SPIRAL. DRUM PULLEYSThis unique design reduces belt wear and misalgnment. As withall self cleaning pulleys, rotation automatically starts the cleaningaction discharging foreign material to the sides of the conveyor.The Continental spiral drum pulley is formed by a pair of verticalsteel flat bars helically wound around a drum, having both begunfrom the opposite extremities of the pulley and meeting in themiddle. There is a uniform pitch to these helices and thus mate-rial is uniformly discharged. This design reduces the possibilityof material build up between the belt and pulley in applicationwhere a self cleaning wing pulley is not practical.SPIRAL WING PULLEYSThe spiral wing pulley is used in applications that necessitatereducing material build up between the belt and pulley while alsoutilising the wing principle of the self cleaning pulley. Thecleaning action begins automatically when rotation begins andmaterial is discharged to both sides of the conveyor. The spiralwing pulley is constructed by helically winding a pair of flat steelbars around the wing pulley; having begun at opposite extremitiesand r:neeting in the center. This design minimizes belt mis-alignment afld decreases belt wear. It can be supplied in either flator crown face in most standard sizes.\\-ISPECIAL DRUM TYPE pULLEYSSpecial modifications can be made to standard pulleys in orderto suit individual customers needs. To the right we see a pulleymodified with retaining rims to assure belt alignment in the headsection of a bucket elevator.SPECIAL SELF CLEANING PULLEYSContinental will engineer pulleys for any special application thatmay be required. The pulley shown here to the right necessitatedentire stainless steel construction and an entirely open design as itwas to come in contact with an acidic bath.0 2021Elevator pulleys.Continental welded steel elevator pulleys are manufactured to close tolerances andare designed to withstand high shock loads. A one piece single disc construction isused in which the rim is continuously welded, on both sides, to the center disc. Thisassures maximum strength with a minimum of deflection. Several models includingsplit type and heavy duty are available in addition to the standard models. Anengineered class is also available to suit any application.The standard range of single disc elevator pulleys incorporate either the 0.0. or theCXT hub and bushing systems. These ensure the greatest possible holding powerfor single hub applications. The Dodge "taper lock" however is available on request.Shaft size must be given careful consideration in the selection of single disc elevatorpulleys since the load is concentrated at one particular point on the shaft.
