Hatfi eld used Earth observation (EO) data and geographic information systems (GIS) to assist park managers with habitat mapping in the mountainous volcanic parks and help determine appropriate park boundaries as well as environmental impacts of human activities within the parks.BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION PLANNING IN VIET NAMHatfi eld provided technical support to the WWF Greater Mekong Program and Thua Thien Hue Province Forest Protection Department in Viet Nam to incorporate remote-sensing and GIS technologies into biodiversity conservation planning and management. We conducted habitat mapping by integrating biodiversity survey data with traditional ecological knowledge collected through community-mapping exercises. GIS-based analysis was used to determine high conservation value attributes and provide a framework for biodiversity conservation planning. BIODIVERSITY SURVEYS FOR THE MINING INDUSTRY IN INDONESIAAs part of the pre-feasibility phase of a development project, Newmont contracted Hatfi eld Indonesia to conduct a baseline terrestrial ecology survey of the Martabe area and develop a conservation strategy. Oursurvey included vegetation, mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and insects with special emphasis on endangered wildlife, including orangutans, tigers, and serows. Soil and air-quality surveys were also carried out to obtain baseline environmental data prior to implementing mining activities in the area. The biodiversity information collected in the initial stages of this project provided essential information, which enabled managers to make critical environmental management decisions.FEATURED PROJECTSWe survey biodiversity, assess environmental impacts, and develop conservation strategies We survey biodiversity, assess environmental impacts, and develop conservation strategies to preserve the rich diversity of fl ora and fauna.
