L’aria in ingresso al biofiltro attraversa dalbasso verso l’alto il letto/supporto (particelle di materialeorganico che, umidificato, si riveste dal “biofilm” acquosoin cui risiedono i microrganismi), metabolizzando gliinquinanti in essa contenuti.Questi vengono trasformati in vapor d’acqua, anidride carbonicae biomassa tramite una reazione di ossidazione biologica conl’ossigeno conenuto nell’aria.Con l’utilizzo di opportuni materiali di supporto organici(compost, corteccie, cippato...) la durata del letto filtrante èdell’ordine di alcuni anni. Una corretta gestione del biofiltroprevede il controllo dei seguenti parametri operativi: temperatura( >10°C), pH (da mantenere prossima alla neutralità),umidità (per assicurare la permanenza del biofilm quindidella popolazione microbica) oltre l’apporto di nutrientie di ossigeno. L’umidificazione si può ottenere mediantescrubber/umidificatore modello ecochimica TW® che oltrea saturare l’aria in ingresso al biofiltro (condizione ottimale)può essere usato anche come stadio di pretrattamento, alloscopo di bloccare eventuali inquinanti che, raggiunto ilbiofiltro, potrebbero rivelarsi dannosi per lo stesso.La fornitura di un impianto integrato scrubber–biofiltro in serie,assicura le condizioni desiderate, dato che l'aria in uscita dalloscrubber è satura d'umidità.A tal proposito ecochimica® può fornire umidificatori dellaserie UHR® meno costosi rispetto agli scrubber TW®, maaltrettanto efficaci allo scopo di umidificare l’aria, meno perun pretrattamento chimico. Infine è indispensabile garantireun’adeguata distribuzione dell’aria in tutto il volume del letto,per facilitare la diffusione dell’ossigeno nel biofilm.TYPE OF EQUIPMENT:Compact BiofilterOPERATING PRINCIPALS:The ecochimica® biofilter is used to treat gaseous effluents. Airentering the biofilter travels upward through the bed/support(organic particulate material coated with an aqueous “biofilm”in which the micro-organisms are present) while thecontaminants present in the air are stripped and metabolized.The contaminants are then transformed into water vapour, carbondioxide and biomass through biological oxidation with the oxygenpresent in the air. Through the use of appropriate materials(compost, bark, wood chips, etc.) the filter bed can last for severalyears. Correct operation of the biofilter requires maintaining thefollowing parameters: temperature (>10°C), pH (as close toneutral as possible), humidity (to maintain the biofilm andhence the population of microbes) as well as nutrients andoxygen. The humidity can be maintained through an ecochimicaTW® scrubber/humidifier which not only saturates the air enteringthe biofilter (creating the optimal conditions) but also can be usedas a pre-treatment stage to remove any contaminants whichcould damage the biofilter if they come into contact with it. Usingan integrated scrubber-biofilter in series assures ideal operatingconditions as air exiting the scrubber is saturated with humidity.For this purpose, where a chemical pre-treatment is not necessaryecochimica® can supply UHR® series humidifiers which are lessexpensive than the TW® scrubber but equally effective inhumidifying the air. Finally, it is necessary to ensure that the airis distributed evenly through the whole volume of the bed tofacilitate the circulation of oxygen through the biofilm.
