L’aria in ingresso al biofiltro attraversa dalbasso verso l’alto il letto/supporto (particelle di materialeorganico che, umidificato, si riveste dal “biofilm” acquoso incui risiedono i microrganismi), metabolizzando gli inquinanti inessa contenuti. Questi vengono trasformati in vapor d’acqua,anidride carbonica e biomassa tramite una reazione di ossidazionebiologica con l’ossigeno contenuto nell’aria. Con l’utilizzo diopportuni materiali di supporto organici (compost,cortecce,cippato …) la durata del letto filtrante è dell’ordine di alcuni anni.Una corretta gestione del biofiltro prevede il controllo dei seguentiparametri operativi: temperatura ( >10°C),pH (da mantenereprossima alla neutralità), umidità (per assicr urare la permanenzadel biofilm e quindi della popolazione microbica) oltre l’apporto dinutrienti e di ossigeno.L’umidificazione si può ottenere mediantescrubber/rr umidificatore mod. ecochimica TW® che oltre asaturare l’aria in ingresso al biofiltro (condizione ottimale) puòessere usato anche come stadio di pretrattamento, allo scopo dibloccare eventuali inquinanti che, raggiunto il biofiltro, potrebberorivelarsi dannosi per lor stesso. La fornitura di un impiantointegrato scrubber–r biofiltro in serie, assicura le condizionidesiderate,dato che l'aria in uscita dallo scrubber è saturad'umidità. A tal proposito ecochimica® può fornire umidificatoridella serie UHR® meno costosi rispetto agli scrubber TW®, maaltrettanto efficaci allo scopo di umidificare l’aria, meno per unpretrattamente chimico. Infine è indispensabile garantireun’adeguata distribuzione dell’aria in tutto il volume del letto, perfacilitare la diffusione dell’ossigeno nel biofilm.
