Biothermica also offers consulting services, finances, structures and takes equity in technically relevant projects based on the monetization of carbon credits under emission reduction schemes such as the Kyoto Protocol. In 1999, its patented Biotox® Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer (RTO) which processes contaminated industrial air streams was awarded the prestigious J. Deane Sensenbaugh prize by the Air and Waste Management Association. Through its Gazmont subsidiary, Biothermica became a significant Independent Power Producer (IPP) of clean energy in Canada with a 25 MW landfill gas power plant located in Montreal in 1996. Bioenergia SA de CV, a Biothermica subsidiary in El Salvador, currently operates a landfill gas collection system on the Nejapa City landfill and a 4 MW power plant will be built in 2007. This project is approved under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the Kyoto Protocol and all accreditation efforts were performed by internal resources. The Emission Reduction Units (ERUs) that it generates are sold on the European Carbon Market. In July 2006, Biothermica was the first entity to contract a “Kyoto” insurance policy from the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA), a branch of the World Bank, to mitigate non-commercial and Kyoto Protocol risks associated with foreign operations in a developing country. Together, Biothermica’s two divisions (Biothermica Technology and Biothermica Energy) have completed landfill gas and air pollution control projects in North and South America, Asia, Africa and Europe for a total worth of over $100 millions CAD. Over the years, Biothermica’s success has been acknowledged by numerous awards. Technical Expertise In 1993, Biothermica pioneered the RTO industry with the installation of the first Biotox® at an asphalt shingles manufacturing plant. With more than 25 references, Biotox® is recognized as the industry’s most advanced RTO for the abatement of condensable gas and other complex applications. To this day, Biotox® has been applied to more than 10 different industrial processes. All forms of contaminant including Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs), Polychloride Biphenyls (PCBs), dioxins and furans have been treated. Other patented technologies developed and owned by Biothermica include the Clinox® high temperature particulate air filter and the Biogat® process for fluidized-bed gasification of biomass. Biothermica also provides expert consulting services based on highly specialized competences and in-house software tools developed through the years.
