Is one of your biggest fears associated with going down the route of implementing a management system the cost associated with implementing and maintaining the system or are you afraid that if you put in place a business management system you will be tied up in knots with procedures and paperwork and have no time to work on growing your business and increasing profits? If these are your fears then please read on to find some answers as to why you should implement a business management system. While it is recognised that there is an initial cost of time and effort required to get a good management system up and running ultimately the benefits of an effective and well controlled management system vastly outweigh the costs. But what are these benefits to you as a business? The following outlines 5 benefits of implementing an effective management system in any business: 1. Increase in customer confidence Having an effective business management system in place particularly one based on any of the ISO standards is a transparent way of communicating with your customers that your business is committed to achieving and maintaining certain standards. 2. Promotes continuous improvement Management systems are based on the principle of continuous improvement and follow the continuous spiral of plan, do, check, review. This means that if you implement an effective management system this continuous cycle of plan, do, check and review will help to ensure that as your business grows, evolves and changes so too does your management system. 3. Marketing tool. Depending on the business you are in and the requirements of your customers having a business management system may be an essential trading requirement for some companies i.e. suppliers with a quality management system in place may be preferred to supply products or services to an ISO 9001 certified organization over a business that © Clearview Compliance Page 2 of 2 September 2010 does not have any quality management systems in place. Also the good reputation and increased customer confidence associated with companies that have an effective management system in place can be used as a marketing tool to set you apart from your competitors who may not have any systems. 4. Increased efficiency Having an effective management system in place in an organisation can assist in achieving improved process efficiency in all areas of an organisation i.e. streamlined production and administration, promotion of teamwork and improved productivity. 5. Cost savings. Overall the implementation of an effective management system within an organisation will contribute towards cost savings as a result of the following: • Reduced costs on inputs • Reduced waste production. • Increased energy efficiency • Improved competitiveness. • Increased efficiency and increased productivity. • Avoidance of expensive remediation costs or penalties associated with non-compliance with legal or customer obligations. Of course this list is endless and every business will have their specific benefits associated with having an effective management system i.e. legal obligations, industry standards, customer requirements etc. However remember no matter what size or type of business you are in, if you would like to improve your business performance and reduce your operating costs, while at the same time ensuring that you meet all legal and other requirements you should implement a management system.
